Here’s the full list of all NASCAR charter sales per court documents
For the 2016 season, NASCAR introduced the charter system. This gave NASCAR teams equity in the sport itself.
Charters offer teams a guaranteed starting position in every race. Revenue is shared between all 36 charter owners.
Additionally, it gave teams something to sell when they decided to leave the sport. Something more than cars, engines and the shop itself. When they wanted to get out, they could sell their franchise.
The first charter sale in 2016 came from Michael Waltrip Racing. Charters were sold to Stewart-Haas Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing for $1.250M to $3.250M.
In recent years, charters have become much harder to come by and the price has exploded. In 2024, Live Fast Motorsports sold a charter to Spire Motorsports for $40,000,000. That set a record.
In 2025, Tony Stewart wanted to exit NASCAR as a team owner. Stewart-Haas Racing sold three of their four charters at $29.5M (Front Row Motorsports), $28M (23XI Racing) and $26.5 (Trackhouse Racing). Team owners Gene Haas and Tony Stewart collected a total of $84M.
These financials were released in court documents ahead of the 23XI/FRM lawsuit against NASCAR.
