Rick Ware Racing agreed to a sale of the team; That’s amid a court dispute with Legacy Motor Club for one of their charters
RWR currently owns two charters in the NASCAR Cup Series. Legacy Motor Club claims they purchased a charter from Rick Ware Racing.
The two teams are in disagreement on which charter was leased. RWR claims the sale of the charter goes into action for 2027. Legacy says the deal was for the 2026 season.
RWR already has an agreement with RFK Racing to lease a charter for 2026. They intended to use the other charter for their own full-time entry in 2026.
Legacy Motor Club opened a lawsuit in April disputing which charter was sold. That case is ongoing.

RWR since issued a counter lawsuit. They noted that they never would have agreed to sell the charter that they intend to use themselves for the 2026 season.

Rick Ware Racing agreed to sell the team; Judge Kuehnert isn’t pleased to hear that
To further complicate this disagreement, Rick Ware recently agreed to sell his team to T.J. Puchyr. Puchyr formerly founded Spire Motorsports.
Judge Kuehnert says he isn’t afraid of holding the counsel in contempt.
Legacy Motor Club is worried that RWR is looking to expedite the sale of the team. They are now trying to prevent the sale from going through as the charter is in dispute.

Judge comments
Judge Daniel A. Kuehnert noted there could be “really serious ramifications” of selling the two charters to Puchyr after telling the courts it had no plans to do so.
“If Mr. Puchyr is saying in public that Charter 27 and 36 have been sold or are in the process of being sold, that’s a big deal,” Kuehnert said as reported by Courthouse News. “Especially when there’s been representations made to the court that there’s no way this stuff is going to be sold. That’s very troubling, I think to any judge.”
Charters are NASCAR’s version of franchises. Charter teams earn significantly more per race than non-charter teams. They also guarantee a starting spot in every event for the 36 charter entries.
The estimated value of this chart sale to Legacy Motor Club is $45M.
