The two NASCAR teams are in disagreement over a $45M charter sale
Charters are NASCAR’s version of franchises. Charter owned teams receive a larger percentage of the purse in each race and are also guaranteed a starting position in each event.
Rick Ware Racing has opened a countersuit against Legacy Motor Club. The lawsuit claims that Legacy Motor Club falsely stated they had been sold a racing charter for the 2026 season.
Legacy Motor Club opens lawsuit against another NASCAR team
In the lawsuit, RWR says that when Legacy approached to purchase a charter, they stated they only had a charter to sell for the 2027 season. The team has produced documents noting they intended to race the Charter for the No. 27 car in 2026.
The two teams are in disagreement as to which charter has been sold. RWR also holds the charter to the No. 36 car.
Legacy Motor Club says the deal is to purchase the No. 27 charter. RWR insists the deal is for the No. 36 car.
“Should RWR be forced to sell Charter No. 27 for 2026, it would have no charter under which to race and would go out of business. For this reason, RWR would never have agreed (and unequivocally did not agree) to sell Charter No. 27 in advance of the 2026 season,” the lawsuit reads.
The team notes that documents in the agreement included several instances of “2025” that should have instead been “2026”.
Legacy Motor Club paid a non-refundable deposit of $750,000. RWR has made several attempts to return that payment.
The sale of the charter is listed at $45M. That’s the highest charter sale price so far.
