Gibbs lays out a change he would like to see on the Next Gen car

Ty Gibbs has been racing in the NASCAR Cup Series since 2022. He has been in a full-time ride at Joe Gibbs Racing since 2023.

Until this year, he went without a Cup Series win. Now, after his win on Sunday at Iowa Speedway he has collected two race wins in 2026.

The 23-year-old caught some criticism as his post-win press conference was only 7 minutes long. However, he did sit in on Dale Earnhardt Jr’s podcast.

He took that time to throw some of his fellow racers under the bus…

“Honestly, I think if you took the digital camera out of the car I think it would be a mix of drivers that probably even wouldn’t be in the Cup series anymore,” Ty Gibbs stated via the Dale Jr Download.

A lot of discussion has surfaced regarding the next-gen car in recent weeks. All of those talking points thus far have been around aerodynamics or horsepower.

Gibbs added his point of view on that subject with a unique take…

“Obviously we want to have a car that races a little better in dirty air, but for the time being, I think if you took those out, I think it’d make the racing a little bit better because you can’t just sit there and look at your iPad and just, blip, go up, and just hose somebody on their line,” Gibbs said.

The digital mirror has been in place since 2022. That launch came alongside the Next Gen car.
