Dale Earnhardt Jr talks about visiting turn 4 at Daytona
The crash of Dale Earnhardt Sr left all of us confused. It’s hard for me, just to write about it. I can only imagine how it was for Dale Earnhardt Jr, the son of the 7-time NASCAR champion.
Visiting the crash site is a whole added level of sadness. Dale Earnhardt Jr describes the day we walked to the grass in turn 4 Daytona. Watch the video below.
Post-crash, Dale Earnhardt Jr was driving by the track with friends, “We drive by the racetrack. We pulled in there and parked down in turn 3. We got out, we walked around.”
He describes the scene, “The track was empty. Quiet. And I’d never been to the crash site. That’s where Dad, in my mind, lost his life. That’s where we all, remember him last.”
“I felt like that was place that I wanted to visit. And every time I go to Daytona, even today, and go around that racetrack… I look at that spot.”
“I look at that knoll of grass. Right there before the exit of turn 4.”
“I wanted to go there and see how I felt. And see what kinda emotions happened. So, I could get whatever that was gunna be, out of the way.”
“I told myself ‘What I’m going through is the same sadness that some guy somewhere in the Midwest is dealing with right now’ ”
“Who am I to go on and on about how hard it was. Cause somebody, somewhere, right now, is dealing with it. You know, dealing with a loss.”
“I’d a loved it if could’ve stuck around a lot longer. But it’s not the way it was suppose to be. And, we figured out how to make it.”
He concluded, “I’d love to win at Daytona. Add another win to the Earnhardt column. Every time I win there, I think it’s another win for me and dad. Any time I win there, I’m like yup, that’s one more stake in the ground. We claim it as a place we dominate.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr heads into Daytona this weekend. In what might be hist final Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start at the highbanks of Daytona.
