Tony Gibson explains the recent speed of Kurt Busch

Stewart-Haas Racing is narrowing the gap to the Toyota’s

“The Toyota’s, we knew the #11 was the car to beat. He was fast on Saturday, all his runs. Even in mock qualifying, he was really really fast. And Harvick was going to be tough. But we felt like we had a top 4 car,” crew chief Tony Gibson told FS1’s Alan Cavanna.

Kurt Busch won the first race of the 2017 season. Kurt Busch has an average finish of 17.5 through the first eight-teen races. However, in the last 7 races that has drastically improved. Since New Hampshire, Kurt Busch has an average finish of 10.7.

What changed?

“I think just getting grounded. You know, we gotta figure out something to catch these Toyota’s. We knew we were off,” stated the #41 crew chief Tony Gibson.

“The #41 was off compared to the #4 car. We knew we had a lot of work to do.”

“We sat down as a company. You know, ‘Where do we get better? Where’s the #4 better than the #41?’ We working really good together, both teams. We came to common ground.”

“We’re sharing information really well as a company.”

2018?

There’s a lot of possible changes at Stewart-Haas Racing for 2018. Kurt Busch had a deadline for a contract renewal with he team. That deadline came and went, no new contract.

Kurt Busch has been shopping around. Where will he be in 2018?

Tony Gibson has a thought on it, “We know if we perform and win and do good in this chase, we’ll all have jobs. It’s hard to get rid of people when they’re winning. If we do that, everything will fix itself.”
