Chicagoland Speedway race results from September 17th, 2017 featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Today, it’s the first race of the NASCAR Playoff’s. The NASCAR Cup Series will circle the 1.5 mile oval of Chicagoland Speedway.

Are the Toyota’s too far ahead? Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch didn’t talk about it. They ended up riding in the same truck during the driver parade today. It’s an all Toyota front row. Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin lead the field to green.

Stage 1

Kyle Busch gets the jump. He pulls Martin Truex Jr with him. Denny Hamlin back to 3rd. Kevin Harvick is hard on the splitter in turn 3, he jumps way up the racetrack.

Brad Keselowski radio: “You folded your skirt.” These NASCAR racecars are modern day Transformers. When the cars hit turn 1, the skirts are designed to bottom out and fold outwards. It add’s a few extra counts of downforce.

However, Brad Keselowski bent his before turn 1. While leaving pit road, during the parade laps, his skirt hit the track and bent inward, under the car. Instead of downforce gained, it’s downforce lost. But, will NASCAR allow Team Penske to fix it? TBA…

Lap 26, Ricky Stenhouse Jr has caught the wall. He drove into the banking on the high side. The car was put into a slide, he drifted up until the wall saved him. Minor damage, but that could cause a cut tire. The crew is debating a pit stop. Stenhouse hits pit road. He returns to the track, -2 laps.

42 to go, Kyle Busch is slicing through traffic. Well ahead of the field. But, the flood gates have opened in the pits. Jimmie Johnson gets the cycle started. Martin Truex Jr, Martin Truex Jr and many more hit pit lane.

Pit road penalties! Martin Truex Jr will be handed a penalty. Too fast exiting for Martin Truex Jr and Erik Jones. Austin Dillon was too fast entering. Ricky Stenhouse Jr had a commitment cone violation.

All drivers will need to do a pass through. 36 to go in stage 1, Kyle Busch hits pit lane. Landon Cassill is the last car who hasn’t pitted. Martin Truex Jr runs 16th. The side skirt of Brad Keselowski has been pulled out in the correct direction.

Kyle Busch has led 66 of 68 laps. Landon Cassill led the other two after pitting late in the pit cycle.

6 to go, 13 cars are on the lead lap. 5 playoff contenders are a lap down. Kyle Busch is riding behind Kurt Busch. As the stage comes to an end, Kyle Busch is going to cut his brother a break. Kyle Busch asked for the gap back to 2nd. Brotherly move.

Stage 2

The field hits pit road. Kyle Busch is first on and first off. More pit road issues for Martin Truex Jr. The team missed some lug nuts and released the car. Truex comes back to pit road to install the missing nuts. He’ll go to the tail for the 2nd time this race.

Green flag, Kevin Harvick gets a great restart. He has big help from Chase Elliott and Brad Keselowski. The 3 are bumper to bumper, pushing. The outside lane is moving into turn 1. Joey Logano slips to the inside, 3 wide for 3rd going into turn 1. Joey Logano lifts.

Kevin Harvick does not lift. He’s even with Kyle Busch in the middle of turns 1-2. Harvick has more speed on the exit. Kevin Harvick carried momentum down the back stretch. New leader, Kevin Harvick.

Lap 98, Kyle Busch has returned to pit road. Vibration. Erik Jones hits pit road as well, tire rub. Penalty! Kyle Busch crew, over the wall too soon. Pass through penalty.

48 to go in stage 2. Kyle Busch has was un-lapped himself. That’s the good news. Unfortunately, he’s still 1 lap down.

37 to go, Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott enter pit road together. Chase Elliott made up 10 car lengths on the brakes. Then, the pit crew completed the pass. Chase Elliott exits pit road in front of Kevin Harvick. He will be the leader when the cycle completes.

Kyle Busch un-laps himself again,  he’s still 1 lap down. Kyle larson is up to 3rd. Martin Truex Jr has climbed back to 5th.

3 to go in stage 2. Chase Elliott leads Kevin Harvick by 1.1 seconds. Chase Elliott wins stage 2.

Stage 2 Results: 1. Chase Elliott; 2. Kevin Harvick; 3. Martin Truex Jr; 4. Kyle Larson; 5. Brad Keselowski; 6. Denny Hamlin; 7. Joey Logano; 8. Kurt Busch; 9. Matt Kenseth; 10. Jamie McMurray;

Stage 3

Green flag, Chase Elliott selected the outside line. It didn’t work out. Kevin Harvick dives to the bottom, he clears him and takes the high line away on exit. Trouble! Jamie McMurray loops down the backstretch. McMurray clipped the left rear of Ryan Newman at the exit of turn 2. That sent him spinning to the infield.

The entire top 7 is filled by playoff drivers. Green flag, Kevin Harvick gets the jump on Chase Elliott. He’s clear before turn 1. Bad restart for Chase Elliott. Brad Keselowski pulls to the outside in turn 1. The continue to run side by side 1 lap, 2 laps. Chase Elliott is clear on the bottom.

Lap 191, Kevin Harvick is deep in lapped traffic. Truex has a run off turn 2. He’s by, with ease. Martin Truex Jr is back to the lead!

Lap 193, Chase Elliott has a run off turn 4. He’s looking to the outside of Kevin Harvick. The #4 thinks about closing the door and taking the high line away on exit. He doesn’t. The door is open for Elliott. He swings by, Elliott to 2nd.

58 to go, Erik Jones has spun in turn 3-4. Caution. Truex Jr wins the race off pit road.

Green, Truex Jr gets the jump. He’s clear on the outside before turn 1.

At the back, Kyle Busch is trying to climb his way into the free pass position. He’s just passed Austin Dillon. He’ll be on the lead lap if a caution comes out.

20 to go, Martin Truex Jr leads Chase Elliott by 3.33 seconds. Kevin harvick runs 3rd.

2 to go, Martin Truex Jr leads by 7 full seconds.
