Jeff Gordon: “Thanks for the help”
Today, Ryan Newman played a bit of a factor in the closing laps of the race. Kyle Busch was chasing down Chase Elliott for 20 laps. He closed a near 5 second gap.
At the end, Busch was there. Chase Elliott couldn’t get by Ryan Newman who was on the tail of the lead lap. Newman was trying to get by a car ahead, he looked under him off turn 4, just ahead of Elliott. At that same time, Kyle Busch went to the high side and drove around both of them.
Kyle Busch drove to victory lane and Ryan Newman was eliminated. Jeff Gordon was on the pit box of Chase Elliott. He was rooting hard, with crossed fingers for the #24 victory. To date, Jeff Gordon is the only NASCAR driver to win in the #24.
After the race, Ryan Newman was concluding an interview with NBC when he walked over to Jeff Gordon. Here’s the transcript:

“Thanks for the help,”Jeff Gordon thanks Ryan Newman from a distance.
Newman walks toward him for a more intimate conversation. Newman responds, “For what?”
JG: “What was happening for the leaders man?”
RN: “You don’t think I was racing for my own position?”
JG: “I didn’t say you wern’t.”
RN: “Well, watch what you say man.” Newman says it with a smile.
JG: “I said, ‘thanks for the help.’ ”
RN: “Yeah, but you said it as a smart ass.”
JG: “No, I didn’t. You took it that way.”
Jeff Gordon retired from NASCAR racing in 2015. He filled in part-time for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr in 2016. This year, he works as a NASCAR announcer for Fox Sports.
Jeff Gordon is also the co-owner of the #48 at Hendrick Motorsports.
