Dale Earnhardt Jr was surprised and impressed with the way Kevin Harvick handled the L1 penalty discussion
Two weeks ago, Kevin Harvick was hit with an L1 penalty. A failed bracket resulted a collapisble roof with resulted in a deformed window. At the same time, parts on the side skirts were also found illegal. The race winner at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was hit with a penalty on Wednesday following the event.
Ahead of his 3rd win of the year, the following week and before taking to the track in Phoenix, Kevin Harvick entered the ISM Raceway media center. He was given an intro detailing a full list of impressive stats for the upcoming weekend. This was the first time that Kevin Harvick was seen in front of the media after his L1 penalty.
“Nobody wants to talk about that. Lets just go to the first question. They all have the stats,” Kevin Harvick boldly responded.
He didn’t avoid the subject. He didn’t shy away from it, at all. Instead, he drove straight for the topic, welcoming the media to ask the questions that everybody wanted to know.
You can watch that media center interview below.
Dale Earnhardt Jr saw the same thing that we all did. He was impressed.
“I’ve had some issues with Kevin in the past. There was some pretty nasty things going on last year,” Dale Earnhardt Jr opens the discussion via this week’s episode of the Dale Jr Download.
Last year, Kevin Harvick stated that Dale Earnhardt Jr shouldn’t be NASCAR’s Most Popular driver. In Harvick’s mind, Jimmie Johnson, the 7-time series champion should be the most popular amongst the fans.
Harvick’s comments stemmed from Dale Earnhardt Jr saying that NASCAR drivers might be paid too much. He later corrected himself saying that ‘ho alone’ might have been paid too much. It was a hot topic between the two NASCAR drivers. But, that’s all behind them now.
“But, I don’t know that he could’ve handled that whole week better and everything that happened at the race track. And I don’t know that a lot of drivers would’ve handled it well at all.”
“Especially as often as he put himself in front of the camera and in the media center to make a miss step, verbally, at any point during the weekend.”
“You know, when you’re in those type of situations you almost try to avoid doing media. So that you don’t make a mistake or misspeak.”
“He actually put himself in opportunities to explain his side of the story. He definitely didn’t shy away from it.”
With the window firmly intact, Kevin Harvick drove to victory lane for the third straight race at ISM Raceway on Sunday. He stood on top of the car and have a high five to the back window.
