Jimmie Johnson comments on the All-Star aero package

4-time race winner comments on the new package

NASCAR is moving in a bold direction for the NASCAR All-Star race this month. As the 1.5-mile program comes under more scrutiny, the series is willing to try things to make it better.

In late March, NASCAR announced a new aero package. They will run restrictor plates, aero ducts, the 2016 splitter and a taller spoiler.

Charlotte Motor Speedway (formerly Lowe’s Motor Speedway) used to be nicknamed Jimmie’s house. He once won 5 races at the track between 2003-2005. He’s since won 3 more with the most recent coming in October 2016.

“I feel the All-Star race is a great place to test things,” Jimmie Johnson said of the new aero package for Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“I’m happy to see NASCAR using that environment. And also the speedway allowing that to happen.”

“In talking to the Xfinity guys that ran the package at Indy… I think Indy might serve that package better with the long straight-aways. To be able to take advantage of the way the aero works on the car.”

“But, lets try. I mean, why not? There’s really nothing to lose.”

“It might not be the package that we love and want. But, I’m sure it will get us a step closer.”

“We’ll continue to evolve. Largely because so many people are willing to take this chance at the All-Star race.”
