Today, the INDYCAR iRacing Series finale is set for the green flag. The oval of Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host the event in virtual Indianapolis, Indiana.

The format is wildly different this week. A series of qualifying events were hosted earlier in the week just to set the field of drivers allowed into the event. That resulted in many big name drivers, like Kyle Busch, to miss the show.
Yesterday, the series hosted the qualifying run and the entire field of 33 cars was separated by less than two tenths. Scott McLaughlin and Lando Norris set the front row.
The session is green and the cars are lined up on the front stretch…

Laps: 70
Green flag, McLaughlin gets the jump on the inside, he’s clear by three car lengths into turn one.
Scott Speed has a run off turn two. He drafts him, pulls even and clear into turn three.
Lap 3, Lando Norris is working the outside lane. He’s looking for a way by the leader but can’t make it happen. Graham Rahal to 2nd as he works inside of Norris.
Lap 5, the caution is out. Palou was looking inside of Karam down the front stretch and was shoved into the inside wall. He was then piled into at turn one by 4 cars. Harvey and Kanaan were side by side and had nowhere to go as Palou was stopped on track.
Many head for the pit lane. The fuel strategy is close if drivers make just one pit stop at halfway. All these cars will be in a much better position later.
Restart
Green, Speed leads them into turn one. Norris looks to make it three wide for the lead into turn three but he lifts. Sage Karam has cracked the top 5 behind them.
Power and Rahal keep swapping 2nd. 2nd place continues to try working the outside lane to get around the leader. That leaves the inside open for 3rd. The swap continues.
Lap 13, Power has a run to the inside into turn three! They nearly make contact! Speed runs wide and falls outside the top 5. Will Power leads.
Pit cycle: Two stop cars
Lap 22, a few cars are on the pit lane. They are on a two stop strategy. Marcus Ericsson and Ed Carpenter are a few of those. Wilson, Karam and other join.
Lap 25, Power leads Norris by a half second.
Lap 29, Davison heads for the pits.
The leaders are trying to stretch the fuel as far as possible. They’ll still need more cautions to finish this race on one stop.
Pit cycle: Leaders pit (possibly one stop)
Lap 32, Power and Norris head for the pit lane. They’ll need two cautions from this point if they want to make it.
Lap 34, Karam pits from the race lead. He locks up the brakes and slides into the pit lane. He makes contact with the pit wall, bent front wing.
Lap 36, Pagenaud pits from the lead. He’s in much better shape to make it on one stop. He ran out of fuel on the pit lane but made it to his box.
Power is running 9th. The top 8 pitted earlier, back at the caution or at lap 22.
31 to go, all the cars that pitted on the caution head for the pit lane.
30 to go, Power leads Davison by 1 second.
Pit cycle: Two stop cars
26 to go, Will Power pits from the race lead, this will be his final stop.
19 to go, Norris to the pit lane.
18 to go, Wilson and Davison tangle! The caution is out.
Rahal, Rosenqvist, Pagenaud, Chilton, Bourdais, Power and others stay out. Half of the field returns to the pit lane. Norris is in 6th, he pitted right before the yellow.
Restart
Green, Rahal leads them single file into turn one.
Pagenaud has a run on Rosenqvist into turn three. He dives to the inside and takes 2nd away.
Pagenaud isn’t done. He has a run on Rahal off turn four. He pulls out of the draft, looks to the inside into turn one and takes the race lead.
13 to go, the caution is out. Newgarden was clipped as he ran the outside lane. Behind them, they were three wide and Sage Karam was sent over the wall and into the fence.
Green, Pagenaud leads. Rahal has a run off turn two. He pulls out of line and he swings to the lead into turn three.
Norris looks inside of both of them into turn one. They run three wide for the lead. They’re out of room! Pagenaud is sent into the outside wall. No caution.
7 to go, they’re three wide for the lead again. Max Chilton to the race lead with Norris and Askew on his bumper.
6 to go, the top five run nose to tail.
5 to go, Askew has a look on the outside of Norris into turn one. He can’t make is happen.
4 to go, three wide for 2nd into turn three. Askew takes it.
Norris is out! He’s collected as lap cars crash ahead of him. Askew takes over the lead.
Final lap, Pato O’Ward looks inside of Askew in turn two. Marcus Ericsson looks to the inside of both of them. Three wide for the lead into turn three for the final time.
Askew runs into the back of Ericsson off turn four!
Ferrucci and Askew runs side by side to the line. Ferrucci just turns left into the right rear of Askew. Askew is hooked into the outside wall and Ferrucci is in the wall with him. They flip to the finish line.
Scott McLaughlin drives by the crashes and takes the win! A thrilling finish!
