Tonight, the 3/8-mile in Wheatland, Missouri hosts the second night in a row for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. It’s the Diamond Nationals paying $12,000 to win on a Sunday night show.

The track has been racing the weather all night. Rain and lightning have surrounded the track from all angles.

But, they’ve been able to get this far. Officials have rushed through the program and we’re set for the start of the feature before 9am local time.

All they need to do is make it to lap 30 and the race is official.

Chris Ferguson and Shanon Buckingham set the front row for the main event. They pull onto the race track as tiny raindrops fall.

Shortly after, they are forced to put it under a rain delay. It was a nice effort but they barely missed the window.

Nearly three hours later, now, the track has been prepped. We’re back and ready to go.

$12,000 is on the line. 50 laps of dirt late model action are up next…

Race Report

The field is given a brief hot lap session just ahead of the main event. Kyle Bronson is quickest by nearly 3 tenths.

Green flag, Ferguson and Buckingham are even into turn one. Ferguson drives it deep to the bottom and slides Buckingham off turn two. He slid inches across his front nose and Buckingham lifts.

The track is bad fast tonight!

Lap 8, the leader has caught lap traffic. Ferguson looks high on a lap car. Billy Moyer Sr fills the inside lane and pulls even! They run side by side but Ferguson holds the lead on the top.

Back in turn one, Moyer Sr is forced to check up as he gets to the bumper of a lap car. Jimmy Owens moves to 2nd.

Lap 12, Earl Pearson Jr is slow and the caution is out.

Lap 12

Green, Ferguson runs the middle. Owens dives to the bottom and pulls to his number but can’t get the drive off the bottom.

Owens jacks himself up into turn one. As he bobbles, Buckingham reclaims 2nd.

Lap 18, Moyer Sr is stopped in turn one and the caution is back out.

Green, Ferguson leads. Owens pinches Buckingham down into turn one and he gets the drive off the top, Owens back to 2nd.

Tanner English jumps the inside tire barrier. As he goes airborne he doors Ricky Thornton Jr. No caution, Thornton heads to the pits.

Halfway

Lap 29, English spins down the frontstretch and the caution is out.

Green, Ferguson leads. Buckingham works the top and he flies off turn two to take 2nd.

Chad Simpson is in the back stretch wall! Kyle Bronson is also involved! The drivers are ok but the red flag is out.

Officials use this time to let drivers change helmets. The track is tacky and many are low or all out of tear offs.

Owens and Moyer Jr have flat tires! Crews go to work on those cars and they’ll go to the tail.

Green, Ferguson leads. Clanton slides Buckingham for 2nd into turn one. Davenport doors Buckingham for 3rd in turn three. Buckingham drops to 5th.

Tyler Erb is slow and the caution is back out.

Green, Ferguson leads. Davenport takes over 2nd.

Lap 33, Ferguson runs the cushion. Davenport is all over him for the lead.

Ferguson drops to the bottom in turn one. Davenport bangs the cushion and pulls even. Caution! Slow car.

Green, Ferguson leads. Clanton pulls ahead of Davenport on the bottom in turn one but Davenport fights back on the outside off turn two to hold 2nd.

12 to go

12 to go, Davenport runs within a car length of Ferguson.

11 to go, Owens comes to a stop in turn one and the caution is out. Owens heads to the pits and back out.

15 cars remain.

Green, Ferguson leads. Bronson makes it 4 wide for 4th.

9 to go, Davenport slides Ferguson for the lead! He can’t clear him on the bottom off turn two. Ferguson barely hangs onto his right rear.

Davenport drives it deep into turn three and completes the slider. Ferguson crosses back under him to retake the lead back into turn one.

Final lap, Ferguson leads Davenport by a car lengths. Davenport has a run into turn one but he doesnt pull the trigger.

Ferguson runs low into turn three to defend on a slider. Davenport has no slider plans. He enters turn three higher than he has laps prior. Davenport then cuts off the banking for a late apex in turn four. He pulls alongside and it’s a drag race to the finish.
