Daytona Duel Results – Race 2: February 11, 2021 (NASCAR Cup Series)

Duel at Daytona race results from the second of two Thursday night NASCAR races

One race is in the books at 2.5-mile oval of Daytona International Speedway. Now, they’re ready to rack the field again with the other half of the field.

There’s a lot on the line in this race. A small number of points are up for grabs. Additionally, the finishing position in this race will be used to set the Daytona 500 starting grid.

Duel 2 will complete the outside row for Sunday. 22 cars are in the field for race two.

Just ahead of the green flag, the rain rolled into the track. Officials spent multiple hours drying the track and we’re finally ready to go just shy of midnight. The track is now completely washed clean and drivers are looking at a brand new surface.

Open cars: David Ragan, Kax Grala, Garrett Smithley and Noah Gragson are the four non-charter cars who are racing for a starting position in the 500. David Ragan is the only one locked in based on his qualifying speed a day prior while Gragson was unable to turn a qualifying lap due to inspection issues. The highest finisher of the other three cars will qualify as two load up and go home.

William Byron and Bubba Wallace set the front row for Duel at Daytona race number two! Another 60 laps of stock car racing are up next…

Duel 2 at Daytona
Race Report

Green flag, William Byron is clear into turn one as Bubba Wallace tucks in behind him. Wallace looks for a way by off turn two, Byron blocks and Wallace dives to the bottom, Wallace takes the race lead!

Lap 2, Byron pulls even with Wallace once again. With help from Austin Dillon, Byron returns to the lead.

Lap 6, the top seven cars run single file around the bottom as Byron holds the lead. Noah Gragson is aggressively slicing through the field, he’s up to 9th after starting last.

Lap 13, the outside lane is coming, led by Kevin Harvick. Harvick gets a push from Ryan Blaney and they both drive right by Byron.

Lap 17, William Byron is locked onto the rear bumper of Bubba Wallace on the inside lane. Wallace clears Harvick and takes the race lead.

As Bubba Wallace attempts to block both lanes, he gets shoved to the middle. They split him and Wallace drops through the field as Harvick returns to the lead.

Lap 20, Austin Dillon is on the bumper of William Byron. Byron returns to the lead via the inside lane.

Lap 32, Byron blocks a run from Blaney on the inside. Harvick is on the bumper of Austin Dillon, Dillon is shoved to the lead. As Dillon moves to the inside lane, Harvick drives by to take the lead.

Caution

Lap 35, crash on the backstretch! Briscoe spun off turn two and collected Alfredo and Grala.

The field heads to the pit lane, led by Harvick and Dillon. Blaney wins the race off pit lane with no tires. Harvick is off 2nd, also with no tires. Byron is off 3rd but he took two tires.

Green, Blaney drops to the bottom as Harvick lets him in in a coordinated effort.

Lap 41, Dillon locks to the rear bumper of Byron and shoves him to the race lead.

Lap 50, Byron leads the inside lane with three Chevrolets behind him. Truex Jr leads a train on the outside lane with a push from Harvick.

Lap 52, Harvick pushes Truex Jr to the lead on the outside.

Lap 53, Harvick has a run on Truex. Harvick dives to the inside and he clears Truex to take the lead. Harvick is now blocking runs from both lanes.

5 to go, Truex Jr has a run with a push from Bubba Wallace. Truex Jr is clear on the outside lane.

Crash

4 to go, Garrett Smithley looks to make it three wide through the middle. Keselowski shuts the door and Keselowski is turned in front of the field. Noah Gragson, Ross Chastain and William Byron are collected. Byron will likely need a backup and will start the Daytona 500 from the rear instead of the front.

We’re going into NASCAR overtime. They’ll see the green, white and checkered.

Green, Wallace checks up on the inside to let Truex Jr drop to the bottom, Truex leads.

White, Truex leads Wallace and Kyle Busch. Austin Dillon has a run on the outside lane with a push from Harvick.

Truex tries to block Dillon but he misses. Wallace powers to the inside and takes the lead into turn three. Dillon crosses under him and they race door to door for the race win!
