Indycar starting grid for race one of the Detroit Grand Prix; Qualifying results from Belle Isle

Belle Isle Park is set to host a double-feature weekend for the Indycar Series. Today, they’ll drop the green flag on the first race for the Detroit Grand Prix. Ahead of the race, the cars on the grid for a round of qualifying.

Qualifying – Report

The field has been divided into two groups based on practice speed.

Each group will take to the track for a 10 minute session. The top 6 advance from each group into the final round. Positions 13-27 are locked after each group.

The final round, times are reset as 12 drivers run for the pole position. The session is 10 minutes with 5 guaranteed green flag minutes.

Group 1 – Round 1

10 Minutes: 6 Advance

Jimmie Johnson was 5 seconds off the pace in yesterday’s practice session. Drivers are using strategy to make sure they don’t catch Johnson during their fast lap of group 1 qualifying.

1 minute remains in group 1, Alexander Rossi jumps to the top of the board.

In the closing seconds, Will Power was outside the top 6. However, he crosses the line and bumps Hinchcliffe by .03 seconds. Laps prior, Power thought he was being held up by his teammate.

Dalton Kellett spins on his final lap. He’s stalled on the track but the session is over.

Alexander Rossi is fastest at the conclusion of group 1!

Group 2 – Round 1

10 Minutes: 6 Advance

Most of the drivers are on black tires early. They’ll come back in and swap to reds later in the session.

5 minutes in to group 2, Herta leads so far with a 1:17.1136. Drivers are re-entering the track with the Red sidewalls for another go.

1 minute to go, Dixon sits 7th on the board but he’s on a flying lap. Dixon jumps to 5th!

Josef Newgarden wins Group 2 qualifying! Group 2 is significantly fastest than group 1.

Fast 12 – Run for pole

10 Minutes

The green is out and the run for pole is next. Drivers will prefer the red tires however it takes 2-3 laps for those tires to reach peak performance. Newgarden has elected to make his first run in this session on his used set of red tires from the last round.

5 minutes remain, Henter-Reay sits at the top of the board with a 1:16.7512. Everyone heads for the pit lane for sticker red tires.

1 minute remains in the session, Roamin Grosjean jumps to the top of the board.

Second remain, Pato O’Ward to the top! Will Power is up on the tracker but he brushes the wall! He tried to keep his foot in it but now the toe is knocked out. Power brushes the tire barrier in the next corner and he backs off completely.

Pato O’Ward will start from the pole position in the Detroit Grand Prix!
