Indycar starting grid for race two of the Detroit Grand Prix; Qualifying results from Belle Isle

Later this afternoon, the Indycar Series will return to Belle Isle Park for race number two of the double-header weekend. This morning, the cars are back on the grid in the streets of Detroit for anther round of qualifying.

Qualifying – Report

The field has been divided into two groups:

Group 1 – Round 1

10 Minutes: 6 Advance

Oliver Askew is in the Arrow McLaren machine after Felix Rosenqvist was taken to the hospital in yesterday’s race. He’s never raced on this track before. He has 10 minutes to get used to it.

5 minutes in, Santino Ferrucci sits at the top of the board with a 1:18.3460. Most of the field is heading to the pit lane for the softer red tires.

1 minute remains, the pace has decreased by over a second as drivers are on the red tires.

In the closing seconds, Ryan Hunter-Reay aborts his lap. He was in the top 6. Colton Herta is fastest at the conclusion of group 1!

5 minutes remain in group 2, Rinus VeeKay sits at the top of the board with a 1:17.2157. Once again, the entire group hits the pit lane for red tires and some added downforce.

1 minute remains, Jack Harvey brushes the wall with the right rear but he stays in the throttle! O’Ward brushes the wall in turn twelve but he’s picked up damage in the process.

Alexander Rossi jumps from 8th to 1st and he’s quickest overall in group two!

Scott Dixon has been handed a drive through penalty which he’ll serve at the start of this session.

Romain Grosjean is out on the red tires at the beginning of the session. He turns a 1:16.2827.

5 minutes remain, Santino Ferrucci is fastest of all after the first run with a 1:15.5978.

Just seconds remain, Santino Ferrucci loses the rear end. As he steers into it, he slams the concrete wall. Heavy damage for his machine.

Josef Newgarden will start from the pole position in the Detroit Grand Prix!
