Rinus VeeKay and Pato O’Ward set the front row. 90 laps of open wheel racing are up next…
As the come to the green on lap one, the green flag is waved off as the official didn’t like the formation. This lap will count as the field rolls around one more time.
Green flag, VeeKay gets the jump. O’Ward has a look to the inside but he bails, VeeKay leads.
Lap 11, Marcus Ericsson is the first car to pit. He’s looking for clean air and an attempt on an alternate strategy. A lap later, Josef Newgarden and Colton Herta hit the pit lane with the same plan.
Lap 15, Colton Herta has a run on Romain Grosjean into turn one. He drives it deep into the corner but he runs wide and over the curb on corner exit. Grosjean retakes the position. Herta is on the softer red tires, Grosjean the harder tire. He takes another shot, this time around the outside! Herta to 20th. Newgarden leads the cars that are on a three stop strategy.
Lap 31, VeeKay and many others hit the pit lane. Colton Herta forces his way by Jimmie Johnson. They bang wheels but Herta is through.
Lap 32, Callum Ilott and Helio Castroneves run side by side into turn six. Ilott drives it deep, clear him but misses the corner entirely. He runs through the grass and into the sand. He’s stuck and the caution is out.
Green, VeeKay leads O’Ward.
Lap 39, Helio Castroneves gets into the back of Jimmie Johnson. A drive through penalty has been issued to Castroneves as Johnson was sent for a spin.
Lap 61, VeeKay is working lap traffic. He dives for the pit lane, O’Ward follows him. VeeKay and O’Ward exit the pit lane bumper to bumper.
O’Ward has a run into turn five, VeeKay blocks the inside lane. O’Ward drives it deep on the outside into turn 5! He pulls even and clears him with an outside move. That’s a battle for 7th currently but he’ll cycle to the lead shortly.
Alex Palou has a faster in lap and out lap, he cuts VeeKay with the pit stop. Palou takes over 2nd.
20 to go, O’Ward leads Palou by 10 car lengths.
17 to go, Colton Herta makes a bold move on Scott McLaughlin for 6th. He drives it deep to his inside despite being multiple car lengths back heading into the corner. Herta misses the corner and clips McLaughlin. Herta spins but he steps on the throttle, spins it around and keeps rolling. He drops to 10th.
10 to go, O’Ward leads Palou by 2 seconds.
4 to go, Romain Grosjean drives it deep under Graham Rahal for 7th. He makes contact but Rahal holds the position. As they exit the corner, Grosjean turns into him, likely on purpose. Rahal holds the spot as he’s vocal on the radio.
