Joe Gibbs Racing shows exactly what brought the disqualifications in video; Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch comment

Last weekend at Pocono Raceway, Joe Gibbs Racing crossed the finish line with a 1-2 finish. Just a few hours later, race winner Denny Hamlin and runner-up finisher Kyle Busch were disqualified. The win was handed to Chase Elliott.

NASCAR added very few details regarding the penalty. However, they did say that it was a piece of tape of the front nose.

This weekend, NASCAR is racing on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. Joe Gibbs Racing has placed the front nose of the No. 11 outside of their hauler. Two pieces of tape are on the nose, showing the other teams and drivers exactly what brought the DQs.

Hamlin explained why the nose is on display, “A great discussion amongst JGR execs that led to the willingness to be transparent with the public about exactly what it was. A great example that we hope other teams will follow if ever in this situation.”

Denny Hamlin comments

“I think it was a shock to all of us for sure,” Denny Hamlin stated.

“I thought we had one of those Richard Petty big engines or something. Not this time, it was a piece of tape. They’re consistent in that this is the way that they want it with this new car.”

“I wasn’t up in arms when I found out. I said, ‘Should it be there or should it not?’ They said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Ok, y’all messed up.’ “

“Shouldn’t have done it. It was pretty black and white from my standpoint. We added something to a stock part.”

Hamlin posted a video earlier this week with the trophy and champagne. Ne joked that the trophy would be placed on eBay. However, he clarified that the trophy has made it’s way to Indianapolis, hinting that it will be transferred to Chase Elliott.

Kyle Busch comments

“It’s excessive for what it was,” Kyle Busch said Saturday of the penalty last week.

“But, I get the process of this car. And, making sure the example is out there.”

“I’m sure sure exactly what happened with our process that that piece of tape got on their. But, it was unfortunate.”

Busch was asked of possible advantages with the tape.

Busch explained, “Minimal if anything. We go back there and run that race tomorrow, we’d run the same way.”
