Zane Smith to fill in for Cody Ware following NASCAR suspension

Zane Smith to drive the No. 51 for Rick Ware Racing at Martinsville Speedway

Last week, NASCAR Cup Series driver Cody Ware was arrested. He’s being charged on felony assault by strangulation – inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor assault on a female.

Earlier this week, NASCAR announced that Ware is indefinitely suspended. Ware pilots the No. 51 Rick Ware Racing machine full-time.

At Bristol, Matt Crafton filled the seat as Ware was absent from the event. This coming week, a new driver will jump behind the wheel.

Zane Smith has been called up to fill the No. 51 seat this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. It will be his fourth start in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Previous NCS starts came with RFK Racing and Front Row Motorsports. His best career Cup finish came in this year’s Daytona 500 with Front Row Motorsports, finishing 13th.

The 23-year-old is from Huntington Beach, California. He’s the 2022 NASCAR Truck Series champion.

The driver has won two of the six NASCAR Truck Series races so far in the 2023 season. Those wins came at Daytona International Speedway and Circuit of the Americas. He has a total of 9 career Truck wins.

Plans beyond Martinsville remain unannounced.
