Josef Newagrden and Will Power are starting this race from the rear of the field after failing qualifying inspection. Team Penske has since let three members go from the team as a result.

Scott McLaughlin warms his tires just ahead of the green flag and he spins out on the frontstretch! He slams the inside wall and McLaughlin is out before the green flag!

Race Report
Green, Shwartzman leads O’Ward into turn one. Jack Harvey clips Marco Andretti as they run four wide into turn one. As Andretti spins across the track he collects Marcus Armstrong. Andretti is in the wall and the caution is out.
Green, O’Ward pulls out of line and he clears Shwartzman into turn one.
Lap 11, Sato pulls out of line and takes the lead away from O’Ward.
Lap 19, caution for sprinkles of rain.
O’Ward leads the field to the pit lane. Alexander Rossi stays out and takes over the race lead. Trouble for Kyle Larson has stalls on the pit lane and restarts from the tail of the field.
Green, Rasmussen pulls out of line and clears Rossi for the race lead.
Lap 40, Rossi has a run into turn one. He pulls out of line, clears Rasmussen and takes the lead.
Lap 43, Rossi and Rasmussen head for the pit lane under green with several others. Drivers are on a mix of strategies. Jake Harvey leads Takuma Sato.
Lap 46, Harvey heads to the pit lane. Sato cycles to the race lead.
Lap 61
Lap 61, Sato and half the field dives for the pit lane. Kyle Kirkwood is handed the lead.
Lap 63, Kirkwood heads for the pit lane. Sato cycles back to the race lead.
Pit Penalty: Colton Herta will serve a pass through penalty for speeding on the pit lane.
Lap 73, Alexander Rossi is leaking oil while running 4th. He heads to the pit lane under green. The car catches fire on the pit lane!
Lap 81, Rinus VeeKay locks up at the pit entry. He tags the inside wall and picks up heavy damage! VeeKay is out of the race.
Lap 84
Lap 84, the caution is out.
Sato leads most of the field to the pit lane. It’s a slow stop for him as Alex Palou wins the race to the pit exit. Robert Shwartzman runs over four of his crew members as he slides through the box. Four cars stay out, Ryan Hunter-Reay leads the field to the restart.
Green, Hunter-Reay leads Devlin DeFrancesco into turn one. Kyle Larson spins into turn two. He collects Kyffin Simpson and Sting Ray Robb. The caution is out.

Ryan Hunter-Reay heads to the pit lane. DeFrancesco is handed the lead.
Green, DeFrancesco leads as they run four wide for 2nd into turn one. Conor Daly wins the battle for 2nd.
Lap 120, DeFrancesco heads for the pit lane. Daly is handed the race lead.
67 to go
67 to go, Daly pits from the lead and he brings several with him. Palou wins the race to the pit exit. Ryan Hunter-Reay is handed the lead as their on a different pit strategy.
Newgarden is on pit lane with a mechanical failure.
63 to go, Daly runs three wide for 5th! Daly wins the battle and the crowd erupts.
61 to go, Rasmussen takes the lead from Hunter-Reay.
57 to go, Rasmussen to the pit lane. Hunter-Reay reclaims the lead as Daly runs 2nd.
31 to go
31 to go, Ryan Hunter-Reay pits under green. He stalls it on the pit lane! The crew struggles to get it fired and he’s now several laps down.
26 to go, Ericsson and Rasmussen dive for the pit lane. Ericsson cycles out and holds the race lead!
25 to go, Palou has a run on Malukas into turn three. Palou to 2nd! Ericsson leads Palou by 0.6 seconds.
14 to go, Palou has a run on Ericsson into turn one. He makes a late dive to the inside, Palou to the lead!
8 to go, Palou leads in the closing laps with Ericsson all over him. Palou has older tires than Ericsson and he’s in dirty air with lap traffic ahead.
1 to go, Palou leads Ericsson by three car lengths. Ericsson wiggles off turn three.
The caution is out as they’re coming to the finish. Alex Palou wins the Indy 500!
