NASCAR comments on Shane van Gisbergen and Austin Hill

Shane van Gisbergen drove into the bumper of Austin Hill at Chicagoland

On Sunday, Shane van Gisbergen drove into the bumper of Austin Hill. The No. 33 backed it hard into the wall, ending his day.

After the crash, Hill drove around the apron. He served into van Gisbergen, making contact under the caution.

In recent years, NASCAR has issued penalties for intentional wrecking. Some of those incidents have resulted in steep fines and hefty point penalties.

Both incidents from Chicagoland were under review by NASCAR. On Tuesday, they issued their weekly penalty report but neither driver was issued a penalty.

NASCAR comments

“We want to have a discussion and make sure that it doesn’t boil over into a significant problem at Atlanta or beyond,” Mike Forde said stated via Hauler Talk. “So we plan to have that conversation on Saturday.”

“We looked to see if there were any anomalies throughout the race and something that spurred this that maybe was payback from earlier,” Forde added.

“We went through all the radio transmissions to see if there was anything that rose to kind of a smoking gun. Camera angles and all available resources, as we always say.”

He concluded, “And nothing in our eyes proved definitively this was 100% intentional and penalty-worthy.”
