The retaliation was not shown on the broadcast from Chicagoland Speedway
On Sunday, NASCAR Cup Series drivers raced on the 1.5-mile of Chicagoland Speedway. There was drama early in stage one.
On lap 48, Shane van Gibsergen drove into the rear bumper of Austin Hill. Hill was sent backwards up the track and hard into the outside wall. The entire rear deck of the car was smashed in the impact.
The No. 33 stated over the radio, “Van Gugenhiemer or however you say his last (expletive) name.”
Richard Childress added, “Yeah that was just payback for California.”
These two have a history. Two weeks ago, Austin Hill crashed on a restart at Naval Base Coronado. Shane van Gisbergen was pushed into the wall after spending all day toward the front of the field.
Video of incident from California is also posted below.
After the race at Chicagoland, van Gisbergen didn’t say that he did it on purpose. However, in recent cases, NASCAR has issued penalties when drivers admit payback.
Austin Hill retaliates under caution
Austin Hill came down the pit lane for four tires. When he left the pit lane, he was on the throttle and passing cars on the apron after being told to come back around and pull it to the garage.
The No. 33 team came over the radio, “Big picture, Austin. Big picture, please.”
Hill pulled alongside van Gisbergen and ran into his door.
Shane van Gisbergen said over his radio, “The, uh, fellow hit my left front. Still straight. You want me to come in and check it?”
