In single-lap qualifying at Daytona International Speedway, Ty Gibbs was allowed to make a second run due to an error from NASCAR officials
On Saturday afternoon, NASCAR Cup Series drivers rolled out for qualifying at Daytona International Speedway. The session sets the grid for Saturday’s regular-season finale.
During the run for Ty Gibbs run, the caution lights came on as he exited turn two. That was a mistake from the officials as there was nothing to be cautious of on the track.
“The caution lights are on in three and four,” Ty Gibbs stated over the team radio.
The team quickly responded, “10-4. Keep running.”
The driver responded, “Dude! The caution lights were on in three and four. What the (expletive)! That’s bull. That’s complete bull.”
He still completed the lap. He turned a laptime of 49.219 which was gone enough for 21st overall in the opening round of qualifying.
However, The Joe Gibbs Racing team elected to accept the mulligan.
NASCAR also offered the team a set of new tires. Yet, the team declined that. Likely, because they didn’t have four tires ready.
On his second run, he improved to 14th overall with a 49.123.
I’ve never seen this.
Update: The final round of qualifying has since concluded at Daytona International Speedway and the starting lineup is set.
