2017 Darlington Race Results from September 2nd, 2017 featuring the NASCAR Xfinity Series

Today, the NASCAR Xfinity Series puts the green flag on the race weekend at Darlington Raceway.

45 laps in stage 1 and stage 2. 57 laps in the final stage. 147 total laps around Darlington Raceway. It’s an all-cup front row, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick lead the field to green. Pole sitter Hamlin, has selected the outside lane.

Stage 1

Green flag, Hamlin has the advantage into turn 1, Harvick pulls even at the center of the corner. They run side by side at the exit of turn 2. Harvick pushes up the track at the banking falls off. They nearly run out of room, inches between them. Harvick loses several positions.

Trouble! Matt Tifft gets turned off turn 4. Ross Chastain ran out of room that the exit, he might have tried to pull in behind Tifft. He caught his left rear and sent him to the inside wall. Tifft will leave the track on the hook.

Slow restart. Green flag, Denny Hamlin clears Cole Custer in turn 1. Custer lifted, he fell all the way to 5th.

Lap 9, caution. Ty Dillon is around. Elliott got close to Dillon, no contact. The air was enough to send Dillon around in turns 1-2. A long slow slide down the back straight away. No damage.

Green flag, Denny Hamlin easily sweeps around Hemric. Harvick restarted 3rd, he’s back to 2nd. Hemric is running his first Darlington race. But he’s comfortable, he’s run Winchester Speedway a million times. To Hemric, this track is very similar.

Jeremy Clements feels something wrong with the car. He hits pit road. Good call, slow tire leak.

Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick have checked out. They run within a few car lengths but have selected alternative lines. Hamlin enters on the high side, stays there. Harvick enters on the bottom, stays there.

Harvick enters below the white line at the entry to turn 1, back in the gas. Hamlin has to lift as he drifts toward the wall. That’s enough to give Harvick the position. He clears him at the exit of turn 2.

Caution. Ray Black II lost it by himself. He slides to the infield. There’s a lot of run off room there, no contact.

Green, Harvick and Hamlin even at the entry to turn 1. Hamlin ran Harvick up the track and all the way to the wall on the entry. He was trying as hard as possible not to pinch his own entry. It didn’t work regardless. Hamlin has to get out of the gas, he loses several positions.

9 to go, Joey Logano slides in front of William Byron on the exit of turn 2. Byron didn’t left. Just a little bump, they both continue.

Ty Dillon is flying through the field. He spun earlier in the race. That set had multiple qualifying laps on it as well. NASCAR elected to give Dillon a new set. His tires are now 10 laps newer than the field and he didn’t use an extra set. He’s up to 4th.

2 to go in stage 1, Harvick leads Elliott Sadler by 2 seconds.

Stage 1 Results: 1. Kevin Harvick; 2. Elliott Sadler; 3. Ty Dillon; 4. Denny Hamlin; 5. Joey Logano; 6. Erik Jones; 7. Brennan Poole; 8. Austin Dillon; 9. William Byron; 10. Daniel Hamric;

Stage 2

Everyone hits pit road for 4 tires. Logano entered pit road in 4th, he left first. Logano will lead the field to green.

Green, Logano and Harvick run side by side through 1-2. Even at the exit, Logano carries more speed off the top and confirms the position down the back straight. Harvick is the only one that makes that bottom competitive on restarts.

22 to go, Harvick is all over the bumper of Logano. He back to running the low line in 1-2 and 3-4. Logano is glued to the wall.

Caution. Dylan Lupton has spun. He bounced off the apron at the entry to turn 1. That unloaded the car completely and the backend stepped around.

Green, Kevin Harvick gets the jump on the restart. He nearly clears Logano into turn 1. He dives it to the bottom, drifts up to the wall. Slide job, new leader, Kevin Harvick.

8 to go, Harvick leads Logano by 2.5 seconds. Hamlin wants the runner-up spot. Denny Hamlin pulls low on Logano, they run side by side an entire lap. Logano lifts and lets him go.

Kevin Harvick swept all 3 rounds of MENCS qualifying earlier, now he’s swept the first two stages in the Darlington Xfinity race. Harvick wins stage 2.

Stage 2 Results: 1. Kevin Harvick; 2. Denny Hamlin; 3. Joey Logano; 4. Elliott Sadler; 5. Erik Jones; 6. Brennan Poole; 7. Ty Dillon; 8. Austin Dillon; 9. William Byron; 10. Daniel Hemric;

Stage 3

Logano has pit stall number 1, Harvick is buried on pit road. Logano again wins the race off pit road.

Green flag, Kevin Harvick again on the inside in turn 1. He had a few feet on Logano at the center. Logano carries on by as Harvick runs the inside all the way through the corner. This time, he slides up into 2nd, no positions lost.

Lap 99, caution #7. Ryan Seig got loose in turn 1. Spencer Gallagher checked up, he was run into. Gallagher was sent for a loop to the apron. No major damage.

Green, Harvick gets the restart advantage a push from Hamlin helps his cause. He nearly clears Logano again at the center of 1-2. Not enough, Logano takes the lead on the outside of turn 2.

39 to go, Logano and Harvick are under a blanket. Hamlin is catching both of them.

Harvick is still looking. He can pull along side, but he can’t complete the pass.

Harvick on the bottom again, he’s got a good run this time. They are side by side at the flag stand. Harvick pulls to the right, a big side draft. Contact. Logano lifts and forfeits the position before the entry to turn 1. He likely didn’t want to run side by side there.

11 to go, Dakota Armstrong has spun off turn 4. He parks it backwards on the front straight. As he pulls away, a smoldering pile of rubber remains in his place. Armstrong spun all on his own.

Logano wins the race off pit road again! The number 1 pit stall really works well at Darlington.

7 lap shootout. Green flag, Logano goes easier in the restart box than he has all day. Logano clear into turn 1. Erik Jones pulls even with Harvick for 2nd.

They run side by side at the exit, they both have to lift. Hamlin drives off the banking to the bottom. 3 wide down the back straight, Hamlin to 2nd. Sadler pulls to the inside as well. Harvick in the middle and on the brakes, Poole get’s into his rear bumper. Chaos for Harvick, he’s outside the top 5.

Elliott Sadler is in the wall! Elliott Sadler was on the inside, he pinched up the track on the exit. Erik Jones tried to avoid it, turning all the way to the wall. Elliott continued climbing. Clipped and sent into the wall on the front straight. Sadler radio, “I’m sorry guys.”

Green flag, 2 to go. Hamlin gets a push into turn 1. He pulls to the door of Logano on the entry, pushes him up the track, maybe a bit of contact. Hamlin to the bottom, slide job. he takes the lead.

1 to go, Hamlin gets loose in turn 1. Logano has an awesome exit, he comes off the corner, a light bump. Logano pulls to the inside, he forgets the brake pedal.

Logano slides in front of Hamlin but he has to slam on the brakes to avoid the wall. He cooked the entry. Hamlin calmly saw it all coming, he’s already pointed his nose to the inside. Crossover, Hamlin takes the lead off turn 4.
