2017 Darlington Raceway Results from September 3, 2017 featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Tonight, it’s the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series throwback weekend, under the lights in South Carolina.

Richard Petty follows the pace car. They’ve told him to hit pitlane but radio communication isn’t getting to him. They have to black flag him. He pulls in with the pace car.

Stage 1

Green flag, Kevin Harvick takes the lead on the inside of turn 1. There’s a lot of space between these cars as they run side by side in the first corner. This is a long race.

Lap 6, Ryan Blaney is in the wall out of turn 4. He bounces off it and continues. Radio, “I hit the wall.” Smoke is now in the cockpit, he hits pit road, misses it. Back in the next lap.

Trouble, Travor Bayne scraped the wall laps ago. Now he’s hard in the wall, flat tire. AJ Allmendinger jumped on the brakes, he slid into the accident scene. As he went by his right rear clipped Bayne’s left rear.

Bayne isn’t happy that Allmendinger wasn’t able to avoid him, he swings hard left down the back straight as they both head to pit road. They didn’t touch, Bayne just wanted him to know he’s not pleased.

The field hits pit road. Clint Bowyer has lost power at the entry of the pits. He said it feel like it’s out of power. That can’t be possible. He gets a push to the garage. Kevin Harvick has issues, theirs a delay in the jack, several pumps to get the car off the ground.

Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch lead the field. Larson takes the lead in turn 1.

Lap 42, Ricky Stenhouse is dead sideways off turn 4. It snapped. He turned hard right to correct it, and it stuck. It’s turned dear right into the wall. He bounces off the wall a few times. Tires are important here, the field hit’s pit road again.

10 to go in stage 1. Kyle Larson still leads. Kevin Harvick is chasing down the leader, the gap is down to 1 second. But, Martin Truex Jr spoils that scenario, he slips around Harvick, he’s now in pursuit of Larson.

Progress has stalled. Larson begins to drive away as Truex has a mirror full of Denny Hamlin. Kyle Larson is on cruise control. Nope! Spoke too soon, Truex is coming. Fast.

Martin Truex Jr might have been saving his tires. He just closed the 1 second gap, in no time. He takes the low groove in 3-4. Larson pulls low to block, as Martin true Jr gets this bumper, the air is removed from the spoiler.

Larson wiggles as Truex gets under him coming the the stage flag. Truex side drafts then heads toward the inside wall to get away. Truex nips him at the line, he wins stage 1! That was a surprise.

Stage 1 Results: 1. Martin Truex Jr; 2. Kyle Larson; 3. Denny Hamlin; 4. Kevin Harvick; 5. Brad Keselowski; 6. Erik Jones; 7. Jamie McMurray; 8. Joey Logano; 9. Kyle Busch; 10. Austin Dillon;

Stage 2

The sun begins to set. Orange sky over Darlington Raceway. Kyle Larson lines up next to Truex on the front row. Larson takes the lead in turn 1.

Lap 126, Daniel Suarez has a flat tire. He’s in the wall. Caution. The field is on pit road again, they might run out of tires.

51 to go in stage 2, Martin Truex Jr is after the lead. He did it the same way that he won the first stage. On the bottom in 3-4. Truex saves his tires in the early part of the runs, turns it on when he needs to.

Lap 155, Matt Dibenedetto and AJ Allmendinger slide through the infield of 3-4. The leader runs into a pile of smoke, he turns it all the way to the inside wall. In these corners, the inside wall here is a full mile out of the primary groove.

25 to go, Martin Truex Jr is on the bumper of Denny Hamlin. They are in a race for the lead, but David Ragan runs the same line as the leader. Hamlin has caught him at the wrong time, he’s forced to lift in turn 1 and dive under the lapper on exit. Martin Truex Jr was already on the bottom. They run 3 wide at the exit of turn 2. Truex to the lead

5 to go in stage 2, Truex leads by 1.5 seconds. Additionally, if he wins this stage, he clinches the regular season championship. Caution. Gray Gaulding has spun. This stage will end under caution.

Stage 2 Results: 1. Martin Truex Jr; 2. Denny Hamlin; 3. Kevin Harvick; 4. Kyle Larson; 5. Kyle Busch; 6. Brad Keselowski; 7. Kurt Busch; 8. Jamie McMurray; 9. Austin Dillon; 10. Matt Kenseth;

Stage 3

Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch lead the field to the green. Hamlin gets the jump, he’s clear before the entry to turn 1.

Caution, David Ragan clipped the apron at the entry to turn 1. It just jumped sideways.

Lap 222, Jimmie Johnson was the first car to take tires on the last pit stop. He restarted 20th. He’s up to 12th.

Lap 234, Ryan Blaney and David Ragan hit pit road. They are both on the 5 minute clock, under green.

Lap 250, Martin Truex Jr is on the move again. As the field complains of a lack of grip, Truex is coming. Meanwhile, the green flag stops have begun.

Lap 252, Truex, Hamlin, Larson and more all hit pit road together. Truex beats him off pit road and he cycles to the lead.

lap 261, caution for debris. There’s a piece of sheet metal at the top of turn 4.

Green flag, Hamlin clear by 3 into turn 1. Truex got on the gas at the restart, he then lifted and got into it again. He didn’t want to go before the leader, nearly did.

Martin truex Jr gets sideways, Kurt Busch slips by.

Lap 290, Hamlin has pressure from Busch. But he begins moving backwards at Truex again put a late run charge. Truex to 2nd.

Lap 298, Kevin Harvick is on pit road.

63 to go, Martin truex Jr is on pit road.

60 to go, Denny Hamlin is still on track. Truex Jr and Kurt Busch have been on fresher tires for several laps, they un-lap themselves. They are going to easily take the lead in this cycle.

54 to go, Denny Hamlin heads to pit lane. He misses it! Kyle Busch is handed the lead. He hits pit road next.

This hands the lead to Kurt Busch. Truex trails. Both of them just swept around Harvick, who was the first car to pitlane.

Lap 325, Busch takes the low line in 3-4. Truex Jr takes it to the wall. On the gas early he evaporates the distance between them. He’s there off turn 4. Busch leaves him the room, Truex sweeps by and to the lead.

32 to go, green flag pit stops have begun. However, not every car plans to pit.

15 to go, Martin Truex Jr remains on track. Denny Hamlin is coming and he’s coming fast. The gap is just under 5 seconds.

9 to go, Martin Truex Jr has maxed out the cockpit track bar adjuster. He’s loose and Hamlin is still coming, The gap is down to 1.5 seconds.

7 to go, 1 second gap. Hamlin gets held up by Landon Cassill. Hamlin gets into him and noses him into the back straight wall. Still green.

3 to go, Denny Hamlin is there. Martin Truex Jr has a flat tire in turn 4! He’s hard in the wall. He turns it for pit road, he’s already gone passed it.

Denny Hamlin assumes the lead. He cruises the final two laps. Denny Hamlin wins the 2017 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
