“I hope this does great things for him,” Joe Gibbs stated at the media center of Phoenix Raceway.
It’s comes at an imperative time for Matt Kenseth. He’s already announced that he will step away for 2018. However, that’s only because he lacked offers for a competitive ride. If he’s offered a competitive ride, Matt Kenseth would likely return.
“I’ve never had a bad one,” Kenseth was asked to rank the win on Sunday. “I can rank the bad one’s a lot easier. I have way more losses than wins. Certainly, just a special day. It’s hard to rank it.”
“It’s not that there hasn’t been any opportunities. There’s just nothing open. Nothing really felt right to me.”
“I feel like I can win races and fight for championship. But, with that being said, you have to have the supporting cast. You gotta have the cars, the team, the sponsor, the manufacture. I’ve got all that where I’m at right now. There’s not an opportunity to continue to race here.”
Team Ownership?
Mario Andretti said after the win, “Hey Matt Kenseth If I had a team in NASCAR, you’d be my driver! Great job at Phoenix Raceway. No doubt you still have it!!”
“Yeah, that’s really neat. But I think he’d be crazy to own a race team. Right coach?,” Kenseth looks to Joe Gibbs.
“I mean, one thing Coach has always told me is, ‘The drivers are the ones who got it the best.’ I can’t really argue with him on that one.”
Would Matt Kenseth consider owning his own team? He responds, “Team ownership for me?! No, no. No, possible way. Zero percent chance.”
How about putting together a late model car? “I don’t know. I don’t have any plans right now except to go race ’em hard next week.”
39th win
Matt Kenseth claimed his 39th NASCAR Cup Series win on Sunday at Phoenix Raceway. He went to victory lane in front of a sold out crowd.
