Dave Blaney plans to do more dirt racing in 2018

Dave Blaney: “You get to the point where to get a little better, you have to do it full-time”

Dave Blaney is a former World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion. He won that title in 1995.

In 1999, he went racing full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. From there, he transitioned to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. He ran 473 races over a 17 year MENCS career.

In recent years, he’s taken a backseat to his son’s racing career. In 2018, Ryan Blaney has his feet planted firmly in the NASCAR world. Ryan heads off to Team Penske where he will pilot a 3rd car for the team.

“I’d go to a bunch of Ryan’s races and then race sprint car part-time,” Dave Blaney told NBC Sports on his role as a father.

“We’ll go to wherever it kind of fits,” Dave Blaney said. “We’ll go to a World of Outlaws race, All-Star race, an Open race, kind of jump around. But I’m hoping to do a lot more racing this coming summer. You get to the point where to get a little better, you have to do it full-time, just like anything.”

Dave Blaney is also the owner of Sharon Speedway. The 3/8 mile dirt track is located in Hartford, Ohio. The legendary track has been in place since 1929. It’s seen many configuration changes since it’s inception.

“I don’t have much of a window looking forward. My window is only about a month at a time,” Dave laughed. “I still love it. We ran a little bit last year and near the end of the year we got really competitive.

“I think we can do it (win more races), it’s just a matter of running more. I’ve got a good couple guys here to go work on them and go with me. We just take it a year at a time, but this summer, if we can get it put together, I’d like to go race more and see what happens.”

Dave Blaney drove the 71M dirt sprint car to two top 10’s and one top 5 during the 2017 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series tour.

On the ASCoC side, Dave Blaney made 7 feature events in 2017. He picked up two top 5’s and four top 10’s.

Dave Blaney did pick up a big win in 2017. That win came late in the season at Atomic Speedway in Ohio. The August 27th race sanctioned by the All-Star Circuit of Champions.
