Ray Evernham purchases legendary Jeff Gordon race car at auction

NASCAR race car famously known as ‘Brewser’ has been sold; Take a look under the car in rare photos detailing it’s design

These days, Jeff Gordon sits in the broadcast booth and Ray Evernham is in his shop, restoring cars and forming racing series (SRX). But, at one time, this dynamic combination lit the NASCAR world on fire with their ‘Rainbow Warriors’ team.

You’re looking at Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo chassis #2421.

The car nicknamed ‘Brewser’ was driven by Jeff Gordon during the 1996 and 1997 season. He entered five races in 1996. It ran in an another four in 1997 as Gordon went on to claim the NASCAR Cup Series championship.

The dashboard is signed by both Jeff Gordon and crew chief Ray Evernham.

This car was exclusively run at short tracks. It ranked impressive stats in the process as Gordon scored three victories, collected seven top-five finishes and notched a championship.

It won NASCAR Winston Cup Series races at North Wilkesboro Speedway and Martinsville Speedway.

Refurbishment

The car was last used on track for testing purposes in 1999. Ten years later in 2009, it was refurbished by Rhine Enterprise in Denver, North Carolina.

“Refurbishment work included installation of the current Hendrick-sourced 358ci V8 and a Tex Racing four-speed manual transmission as well as preparations to ready the car for use on short tracks and road courses.”

The engine block is labeled JRH-049. The 358ci SB2 V8 is fitted with a Holley 830-cfm NASCAR carburetor, carbon-fiber air-cleaner cover and Hendrick Motorsports valve covers.

Chassis No. 2421 came with a full log of notes from the team during it’s on-track action.

It was recently put up for auction from an Arizona seller. Bring A Trailer hosted the auction.

Plot twist, Ray Evernham has purchased the machine and the legends have been reunited. It was sold on Thursday, January 21 at 2:02pm at the price of $155,000.
