Roval results from Charlotte Motor Speedway; Chaos in the NASCAR Playoff elimination race
Today, the NASCAR Cup Series unloads at The ROVAL in Charlotte, North Carolina. It’s the ROVAL 400 on the 17-turn Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course.

This is a playoff elimination race. After this event, the playoff field will be trimmed from 12 drivers to just 8.

Stage 1 – Report
Laps: 25 (1-25 / 109)
Green flag, Hamlin and Keselowski run side by side into turn one. Hamlin noses ahead as they reach turn three.
Lap 2, Joey Logano dives to the inside of teammate Keselowski into the front stretch chicane. Logano to 2nd.
Lap 6, Aric Almirola and Chris Buescher fight for space in the backstretch chicane. Almirola is around, no caution.
Lap 10, Harvick, Truex, Bell, Blaney, Kyle Busch and other hit the pit lane under green for four tires. They can’t fuel before the competition caution.
Pit Penalty: Bell has been caught speeding and will serve a pass through.
Lap 11, Hamlin, Byron, Kurt Busch and others hit the pit lane. As they leave the pits, the competition caution is out. Logano stayed out to take over the lead.
More drivers head for the pit lane under yellow. Logano stays out with 7 others. Hamlin will restart in 8th.
Green, Logano and Blaney run even into turn one. Blaney wins the battle on the outside out of turn one.
Lap 14, Brad Keselowski spins in the backstretch chicane, no caution.
Lap 20, Ryan Newman spins with a flat right rear. He tags the wall and the caution is out.
Hamlin pits from 4th. Blaney stays out. Hamlin restarts outside the top 20.
Green, Elliott spins the tires on the inside. Allmendinger crosses from outside row two to the inside in turn one. Allmendinger takes over the lead.
2 to go in stage one, Allmendinger leads Chase Elliott by a car length. Ryan Preece spins behind them in the front stretch chicane, no caution.
1 to go, Allmendinger wiggles in the infield. The opens the door and they run side by side for the stage win. Elliott completes the pass under braking into the back stretch chicane.

Stage 2 – Report
Laps: 25 (26-50 / 109)
Elliott and others hit the pit lane. Many stay out after pitting toward the end of stage one, Allmendinger cycles back to the lead.
Green flag on stage two, Allmendinger and Kyle Busch run side by side into turn one. Kyle Busch noses ahead in turn three, Byron follows him through to take 2nd.
Lap 34, Chase Briscoe spins with help from Ricky Stenhouse Jr and the caution is out.
Both Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman are suffering from electrical issues. Each of them pit as crews go to work.
Green, Kyle Busch leads Harvick into turn one.
Lap 44, Kyle Larson is slicing through the field in search of stage points. He’s up to 19th.
3 to go in stage two, Byron, Allmendinger, Hamlin and others hits the pit lane.
Kyle Busch stays out and picks up the stage two win on the ROVAL.

Stage 3 – Report
Laps: 59 (51-109 / 109)
Kyle Busch and the rest of the leaders hit the pit lane. The hood goes up on Larson’s machine as the team changes the alternator belt and the battery.
Byron and Dillon cycle to the front row. Kyle Busch restarts 20th.
Green, Byron is clear into turn one.
Lap 55, Kevin Harvick turns Chase Elliott! Elliott slams the wall in turn 7 and the caution is out! Huge damage for Elliott as he hits the pit lane.
Green, Byron leads as Dillon and Hamlin run side by side for 2nd. Dillon wins that battle.
Lap 59, AJ Allmendinger is slow with a mechanical issue.
Lap 69, Denny Hamlin misses the backstretch chicane. He brings it to a full stop in the front stretch chicane to serve the penalty.
34 to go
34 to go, green flag pit stops are underway. Truex, Kyle Busch, Bell and others pit. A lap later, William Byron pits from the race lead.
29 to go, Byron cycles back to the race lead. Tyler Reddick trails by 1.3 seconds.
23 to go, Chase Elliott’s bumper cover has blown off down the back stretch. Caution for debris.
Byron pits from the race lead, many follow and many stay out. Hamlin restarts from the lead as Byron restarts 6th with fresh tires.
Green, Hamlin gets the jump and DiBenedetto spins the tires. Dillon takes over 2nd. Byron is on the charge as he moves to 3rd on the outside through the infield section.
20 to go, Brad Keselowski spins in the backstretch chicane as they entered three wide.
19 to go, Byron and Larson have a run on Dillon out of turn 8. They both look inside of Dillon into the back stretch chicane. Larson gets into the bumper of Byron under braking! Byron is shoved into the corner. He’s forced to come to a complete stop to serve a penalty. Byron falls outside the top 10.
17 to go, Corey LaJoie, Michael McDowell, Chase Elliott and Josh Bilicki tangle as they run four wide in turn two. They run out of room, LaJoie smacks the wall and the caution is out.
14 to go
Green, Hamlin gets the jump on Larson and leads into turn one. Larson looks inside in turn three but can’t complete the pass. He rubs on Hamlin’s bumper in turn 6 but he still can’t get him. Larson has a run out of turn 8. He looks to the inside and they run side by side through the chicane. Hamlin holds the lead once more. Larson throws a huge block on Reddick and run him to the apron but Reddick forces his way by.
11 to go, Chase Elliott is flying through the field. He’s inside the top 15 and closing on Kevin Harvick! It’s gets to within a car length into turn one. Harvick locks up the front wheels on his own, slides through turn one and slams the wall. Harvick climbs from the car as cheers erupt from the stands.
Green, Hamlin clears Larson into turn one. Larson leans on his bumper off the corner. Larson drives it deep into turn three, he runs Hamlin wide off the corner. Kyle Larson to the lead!
5 to go, Larson leads Reddick and Byron by 1 second.
4 to go, Martin Truex Jr gets turned into the backstretch chicane, no caution.
2 to go, William Byron is off track, in the grass in the wall! He was in a must win situation.
