John Hunter Nemechek, Joe Nemechek set to race at teammates

Sam Hunt Racing will field the car at Daytona International Speedway

Joe Nemechek and son John Hunter Nemechek are set to roll to the grid as teammates. They’ll both drive for Sam Hunt Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Daytona International Speedway.

Hear from the family below.

John Hunter Nemechek will pilot the No. 26 Freedom 13 Toyota Supra with Allen Hart serving as the crew chief. Joe Nemechek is set to drive the No. 24 FleetWing Toyota Supra as Eric Phillips takes the crew chief role.

Back in 2017, Joe Nemechek and son John Hunter ran their first NASCAR race against each other. That happened in the NASCAR Truck Series at Daytona. They have since run 29 Truck events, 13 Xfinity events and 3 NASCAR Cup events against each other.

However, the last time they competed as teammates was in 2019 at Phoenix Raceway as they both drove for NEMCO Motorsports.

“Running multiple cars at Daytona is always special, but even more so now having a father and son combo driving for us as teammates,” said Sam Hunt.

Hunt added, “John Hunter has been a big part of SHR’s growth, and to now have Joe join us at the tail end of his accomplished career is something I’ll cherish for a long time. At the end of the day, family is everything to me. I’m honored to be a part of this memorable moment for the Nemechek family and hope they both take the time to enjoy the weekend.”

Joe Nemechek comments

Joe Nemechek is a former NASCAR Xfinity Series champion.

“If this is to be my last time to race in a NASCAR event, I am looking forward to being a teammate again with my son,” said Joe Nemechek.

“I am excited to race for Sam Hunt Racing as it shares many qualities with the foundation that NEMCO Motorsports was built upon. I see Sam Hunt Racing as a very strong team, and the wins and championships are coming soon.”

Joe added, “Racing with my son again is special, and my expectation is to be on the lead lap in the mix with John Hunter. I’m excited to see what happens.”

This will be the first start for Joe Nemechek in the 2022 season.

Crew chief Eric Phillips is the winningest crew chief in the NCWTS. He’ll work with Joe Nemechek at Daytona.
