Here’s the new format for the 2023 NASCAR All-Star race

NASCAR hasn’t raced at North Wilkesboro Speedway since 1996. Following a massive upgrade of the facility, NASCAR Cup Series teams will return to the track this weekend.

The All-Star Race is an exhibition event will no points on the line. However, a check for $1M awaits the winner. For 2023, the race will see an all-new format.

Qualifying

Qualifying will take place on Friday.

The pit crews will be used to set the starting lineup for the two heat races. For the Pit Crew Challenge, teams will perform a four-tire pit stop. Timing lines for the stop will be placed one stall before the pit box and one stall after the box.

Fuelers will be a part of the pit stop as well. However, their cans will be empty.

The faster the pit stop, the further toward the front of the field teams will start in the heat races. Additionally, the fastest pit crew will be handed a $100,000 bonus.

First, third, fifth and so on from the pit crew challenge will lineup in heat 1. second, fourth, six and other even numbered finishers will race in heat two.

21 cars are already locked into the All-Star race. For the other drivers, they’ll race in the All-Star Open LCQ, lineups for the Open will also be sit via the pit crew challenge.

Heat Races

Heat races will be run on Saturday.

Each heat race will be 60 laps. 11 cars will participate in heat 1 and 10 in heat two.

Results from heat 1 will lineup the inside row for the All-Star race feature. Heat 2 results will sort the outside row.

Heats are free of stages. Caution laps will count in the heats. Teams will have one extra set of fresh tires for an optional pit stop.

All-Star Open

Laps: 100 (Top 2 Transfer)

The All-Star Open takes place on Sunday.

16 drivers will take part in the All-Star Open. Only two cars will advance from the Open race.

The race is 100 laps in distance. A competition break is scheduled around lap 40.

The top two finishers from the All-Star Open transfer to the tail of the All-Star race.

Additionally, one driver who has not already advanced into the feature will join the field via the Fan Vote.

Format

Laps: 200 ($1,000,000 to win)

The All-Star race takes place on Sunday night, under the new LED lights at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

24 drivers will start the 200-lap race. Around lap 100, NASCAR will through a competition caution.

Teams will have three additional sets of tires on the pit lane. However, after lap 100, teams will only be allowed to use one additional set of sticker tires.

The race winner will be handed a check for $1,000,000.
