How much money did the 2023 Indy 500 winner make?

Josef Newgarden collected a record breaking payout for the win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

On Sunday, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted the Indycar Series for the biggest race of the season. It was the 107th running of the famed Indy 500.

And for the second year in a row, the race winner earned a record breaking payout. Drivers were given an average payout of $500,600.

After several late race crashes, the race went green with just a single lap to finish the event. And on the final lap, Josef Newgarden made a pass to win it all.

32-year-old, Josef Newgarden of Team Penske earned $3.666 million from a total purse of $17,021,500.

Marcus Ericsson, the second place finisher took home $1.043 million.

Benjamin Pedersen is awarded the Rookie of the Race award. He earned a $50,000 bonus for the award, taking home $215,300.

“This is the greatest race in the world, and it was an especially monumental Month of May featuring packed grandstands and intense on-track action,” Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles said.

Miles added, “Now, we have the best end card possible for the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500: a record-breaking purse for the history books.”
