Sammy Smith stated the race from the pole position. However, the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing car finished 6th in stage one and then he dropped to 17th at the end of stage two.

At the conclusion of stage two, the field hit the pit lane for a round of pit stops.

As Smith pulled into his pit stall, a huge fire broke out on the left side of the car. A crew member was fully engulfed in the flames.

The crew member very casually walked out of the fire. His firesuit was on fire. He walked slowly toward the fire safety crew, pointing at his suit as he was on fire.

The safety team sprayed down the crew member and extinguished the fire. They then sprayed the ground and the side of the car as well.

The crew member that was on fire a few seconds prior still had a job to complete. He went back to changing the right rear tire, waving off the fire extinguisher.

He completed the pit stop.

The crew member was invited for a ride on the golf cart to the medical center. He stated, “I’m fine.” But, the team still wanted him to get checked out.
