NASCAR electric racecar has leaked (Photo)

Take a look at the new NASCAR electric SUV that’s set to debut in 2024

For years, NASCAR has been exploring electric and hydrogen powered machines. NASCAR hasn’t released many details on the development.

During the season finale at Phoenix, NASCAR confirmed they have already built an electric car. This is the first time NASCAR has confirmed the development of a car.

Days later, a photo of the car has leaked onto the internet. It appears the photo was taken at the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord, North Carolina.

The wing has returned. NASCAR’s COT made it’s debut with a wing several years ago. However, issues arose as that wing caused lift and lifted cars clear off the ground when they were turned around backwards.

More interestingly, the new electric car is actually an SUV or hatchback type of body shape. The brown wrap on the machine lacks any display of manufacturer logos.

NASCAR already has plans to put the car on display. They noted the car would be placed in front of fans in 2024. Though, that’s not likely to be a race of any kind.

What did NASCAR say about going electric?

The following was stated last week in Phoenix:

“We’ll continue to look at what forms of racing we would bring outside the U.S., what technology is under the hood,” Steve O’Donnell stated.

“A lot of opportunities for us as a sport, be it alternative fuels, electric, hydrogen. Everything’s on the table, which is unique for I think us as a sanctioning body in terms of having that Garage 56 program, having our Next Gen car designed specifically for all kinds of different power units.”

“We’re excited about the opportunities and can vary those depending on where we’re at, country or continent.”

Yeah, a lot of work’s gone on at the R&D department around EV.”

“We have a car. We have an alternative body style with that car. I would not look for us specifically to go racing with it. I think you could see it showcased at certain events next year. But there’s other forms that we want to look at.”

“I’m actually headed to Japan Thursday to go look at hydrogen racing specifically. We’ve got a contingent heading over to Japan to look at that.”

“We want to kind of test each and every form. Really excited about what our teams put together around an electric car. Again, wanted to showcase that to the fans and explore other technologies, as well.”

What NASCAR said last year about electric

The following was said at the end of the 2022 season:

“Well, I’m like the fans, I’m curious too,” Steve O’Donnell stated via Sirius XM NASCAR Radio on the possibility of a new manufacture.

“We do have those discussions and it’s a challenge. There’s so much going on in the auto industry right now.”

“There’s a balance between electrification, what we do for racing, hydrogen in the future, autonomous vehicles. You have to weigh all those things in a discussion now versus where we were 10 years ago.”

“There are ongoing discussions. I can say that there is interest. It’s a matter of dialing in, what we’re racing at our national series of car.”

“The biggest thing for us is making sure it’s entertaining for the race fans. What we race has to produce the racing that the fans expect.”

“That balance between where a manufacturer may want to go and what we want to deliver for the fans, we need to strike that balance.”
