William Byron had a beer can in his air filter after Las Vegas (Video)

William Byron ran over a trash bag during the race; That bag likely had a beer can in it after the crew inspected the car post-race

On Sunday, the NASCAR Cup Series raced at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. We saw a very odd incident involving William Byron.

Watch the William Byron trash bag video below.

Early in the race, Byron picked up a huge piece of debris on his grill. The debris was an extra large trash bag that covered more than the grill but most of the front nose.

The engine quickly climbed to 350 degrees. Far exceeding desired temperatures.

Byron was forced to pit under green. The crew removed the bag and sent him back out into the race. The engine temperature returned to normal. However, Byron was now a lap down and needed a free pass.

“It was huge. It seemed to get stuck somewhere underneath,” Byron told Bob Pockrass.

“I don’t really know. I just know my temperatures went from 250 or whatever to 350 in like 10 seconds. I’ve never had that happen.”

Rudy Fugle comments on the trash bag

“This thing was like a 55-gallon trash bag for those big trash cans you see on the infield of the race track,” Rudy Fugle stated via Sirius XM NASCAR Radio.

“Even worse than that or even funnier than that, I’m pretty positive it had a beer can in it. Cause that beer can got stuck in our air filter.”

“After the race, there was a silver bullet, in our air filter. Never seen anything like that before either.”

“The water stayed in, just a good engine shop.”

“It’s a shame that that happens, but something happens to everybody once in a while. So, if we get it out of our system now, and just keep fighting as a team, it’s a character-builder,” Fugle explained.

One of the sponsors attended the race and sat in the pit stall of the No. 24 team. Those sponsors collected the bag.

“I think one of the sponsors that were there with us, they had the bag.”

“I saw them after the race with it,” Fugle added. “So I’m like, ‘OK that’s a souvenir for them.’ ”
