NASCAR has fixed a loophole in inspection penalties
Before each race, NASCAR teams must pass through the inspection line. NASCAR laser scans every car to make sure cars meet every line within the thick rule book. Multiple tech failures result in increasingly steeper penalties.
1 failed tech attempt: no penalty.
2 failed attempts: Crew member ejected and the team loses pit selection.
3 failed attempts: Crew member ejected, loss of pit selection and the team is not permitted to qualify. Additionally, the team must serve a pass-through penalty at the start of the race.
Now, the penalty for three failures has been updated slightly. If a car must serve a pass-through penalty, that penalty must be served under the green flag.
If a yellow comes out on the opening lap, the penalized car still must serve their pass-through penalty on the next restart, under green flag conditions.
New inspection penalty rule
“At track penalties that may be imposed as a result of a Pre-Race violation and must be served after the affected vehicle receives the green flag on the racetrack and enters pit road under green flag conditions are the following:”
– Pass-through.
– Stop and go.
– Holding a vehicle for a lap or time penalty.
