Indy 500 inspection issues; Three cars disqualified

Indycar issues big penalties, fines and suspensions after the Indianapolis 500

On Sunday, Indycar hosted the famed Indy 500. The 500mile race took place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

After the race, teams must pass tech inspection.

A late race pass from Alex Palou sent him to victory lane. The winner has cleared tech inspection but three others have not.

Marcus Ericsson, Kyle Kirkwood and Callum Ilott have all failed post-race tech inspection.

Each team has been disqualified. Teams have been issued a $100,000 fine and the team manager for each has been handed a 1-race suspension.

Ecisson (2nd place) and Kirkwood (6th place) both had the same violation on the Energy Management System (EMS). They were in violation of mounting points and parts.

Illott (12th place) failed left side minimum height.

Andretti Global: Statement

Andretti Global fielded the car for Marcus Ericsson who crossed the line in 2nd as well as Kyle Kirkwood who finished 12th. They issued the following statement:

“We are in receipt of the Indianapolis 500 post-race penalty notice as provided by Indycar.”

The team added, “We are taking the necessary time to assess the information and we will be requesting a full review with Indycar.”

Prema Racing: Statement

The team of Callum Ilott issued the following statement on Monday:

“Following the Indy 500, the #90 PREMA car driven home in P12 by Callum Ilott was found in breach of the technical regulations due to a front wing endplate not meeting the minimum height. As a consequence, the team was disqualified from the race and received accessory sanctions.”

“While the same wing was completely original, successfully passed tech multiple times throughout the month, and the issue didn’t lead to any performance gain, the car ended up being non compliant with the rules at the end of the race, so the team accepts full responsibility.”

“The team is currently investigating the root of the problem, which can involve incidents and fitment or production issues. We look forward to implementing the needed procedures to ensure improved control and avoid these kinds of issues in the future.”
