Today, the NASCAR Cup Series is racing on the 2-mile of Michigan International Speedway. The track is one of NASCAR’s fastest tracks.

On a restart in stage three, Chase Elliott shoved teammate William Byron to the race lead. Behind him, Elliott and Bell were in a battle for 2nd.

In turn three, Elliott wiggled loose on the inside. As he chased it up the track, Christopher Bell was collected.

The initial contact, pointed Bell nose first into the outside wall. Bell slammed the outside wall, crushing the car and sending it into a ball of flames.

After contact with the outside wall, Elliott slid across the track making more contact with the inside barrier.

The impact was so large that the wall is permanently dented inward from the impact. NASCAR officials are currently working to make wall repairs.

Both drivers were able to climb from their cars. Elliott walked over to check on Bell after the impact.

“I wanna give NASCAR a ton of credit. All the safety,” Dale Earnhardt Jr stated.

“I don’t know if you’ll be able to see a car hit a wall harder than that and be able to get out and walk away.”

The race is currently ongoing.

Update: The race has since concluded.

Chase Elliott comments after the crash

“I’m fine,” Chase Elliott told Prime Video after exiting the infield care center.

“Totally my fault, I feel really bad for Bell and taking him out. I was just trying to run in the bottom and make use of our fresh tires.”

“Got in there, got free and I thought I was going to spin. And was kinda committed to spinning out. As soon as I started to commit to spinning, it just hooked up and hooked a right.”

“Unfortunately, it sent Christopher in the wall and me shortly there behind. I stepped over the line and paid for it.”

“I just told him ‘I’m sorry’. Obviously, it was not on purpose but I knew that was a big hit for both of us. I think he took the brunt of it honestly.”

“I have a lot of respect for Bell. And, we’ve always shown each other a lot of respect on track. I’m glad he was alright.”
