Pocono Race Results: June 27, 2021 (NASCAR Cup Series)

NASCAR results from Pocono Raceway; Race #2 of the weekend

Next up, the NASCAR Cup Series is set to conclude the weekend at the 2.5-mile triangle of Pocono Raceway. It’s their second race of the double-header weekend in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

Kyle Larson nearly won yesterday but crashed on the final lap. Today, he’ll be dropping to the rear of the field for the start after the team unloaded the backup car.

Justin Haley was scheduled to run this event. However, following an Xfinity crash a few hours prior, Justin Allgaier has been selected to pilot his Cup ride.

An invert from yesterday’s finish has set the field, Chris Buescher and Michael McDowell line up on the front row. 140 laps of stock car racing are up next…

Pocono Race
Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 30 (1-30 / 140)

Green flag, Buescher and McDowell run near even into turn one. Buescher clears him on the outside off turn one.

Lap 2, Anthony Alfredo is in the wall with a flat tire and the caution is out.

Green, Buescher noses ahead of McDowell into turn one. Buescher runs wide and half of the field drives by on the inside as he gathers it up, McDowell leads.

Toward the back, Hamlin checks up in front of Larson. Larson drives into his rear bumper and picks up some nose damage.

Lap 14, Martin Truex Jr is all over the bumper of McDowell in the battle for the lead. McDowell runs the middle in turn one as Truex Jr cuts to the inside in search of clean air. Truex Jr has a run on him into turn two. He clears him, Truex Jr leads.

Lap 20, Truex Jr leads Christopher Bell by 1.7 seconds.

3 to go in stage one, Bell and Kyle Busch hit the pit lane.

Final lap in stage one, William Byron is a lap down. However, he’s racing the leader to the start/finish. Byron gets his lap back by a half car length.

Martin Truex Jr cruises to the win in stage one at Pocono Raceway!

Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 55 (31-85 / 140)

Truex Jr and the rest of the leaders hit the pit lane. Larson’s crew is going to work on the nose of his damaged machine. Keselowski and Bell line up on the front row for stage two.

Green flag on stage two, Keselowski and Bell run side by side into turn one. Bell can’t make it stick on the inside, Keselowski powers to the lead. Byron runs 5th after unlapping himself by just a few feet at the end of stage one.

Lap 47, Keselowski hits the pit lane under green. Kyle Busch is handed the lead. Byron takes over 2nd.

Lap 52, Ryan Blaney hits the pit lane for an unscheduled stop. It sounds like a loose wheel.

Lap 66, Byron hits the pit lane from 2nd.

Lap 74, Busch pits from the race lead. However, it’s stuck in 4th gear and that’s going to slow his stop significantly.

Lap 78, Byron cycles to the race lead. Keselowski trails by 1.2 seconds.

William Byron drives to the win in stage two at Pocono Raceway!

Pocono Race
Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 55 (86-140 / 140)

Byron stays out. Keselowski pits from 2nd and many follow.

Green flag on stage three, Byron leads into turn one with a push from Hamlin. Bell and Hamlin run side by side for 2nd, Hamlin takes that spot off turn one on the outside lane.

Lap 92, Erik Jones has a flat left front. No caution as he hits the pits under green.

93 to go

Lap 93, caution for debris.

Byron pits from the lead. Hamlin and others follow. Fuel only for Hamlin. Byron takes four tires. Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell stay out with half the field and they line up at the front.

Green, Bell gets sideways after a push from Elliott before turn one. Alex Bowman powers by on the inside and takes the race lead.

Lap 97, Bell and Chastain fight for space in turn three. Chastain runs wide and shoves Bell into the wall. Chastain has a flat tire, he heads for the pits.

A lap later, Chase Elliott gets loose under Bell and Bell is sideways off turn three! He tags the wall hard with the right rear but he keeps it rolling, no caution. Bell to the pits under green.

40 to go, Elliott slows with a flat tire and he also hits the pit lane for an unscheduled stop.

32 to go, Harvick is all over the bumper of Bowman in the battle foe the lead.

28 to go

28 to go, Harvick pits under green.

25 to go, Bowman hits the pit lane from the race lead. We have a fuel mileage race forming and many teams are saving fuel and trying to stretch it to the end.

10 to go, Keselowski leads. Byron trails by 16 seconds. Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson run nose to tail 20 seconds behind the leader. All five of those cars are saving fuel and trying to make it to the end.

9 to go, Hamlin moves to the outside in turn three, He drives by Kurt Busch to take 3rd away.

8 to go, Keselowski pits and hands the lead to Byron.

6 to go, Byron leads Hamlin by 1.9 seconds.

3 to go, Byron is out of fuel and he hits the pit lane under green. Hamlin takes over the lead, Kyle Busch trails by a car length.

Coming to the white flag, Hamlin is out of fuel! He pits from the lead and hands it to Kyle Busch!
