Felipe Massa saddened; teammate tried to strangle competitor in on-track fight

Rodrigo Dantas vs Tuka Rocha in 500 Milhas de Kart

Rodrigo Dantas was slowing down A1 Grand Prix racer Tuka Rocha. As Rocha attempted to pass, he gave up on clean attempts.

Instead, he put the bumper to Dantas. Once, twice after a few attempts they both ended up sliding off the racing surface and into the tire barrier.

So far, it’s sort of a racing deal. Just a driver that lost his cool for a brief moments and tried to force a pass. Those happened from time to time.

However, Rodrigo Dantas, teammate to Felipe Massa and Tuka Rocha then stood up in their karts. Helmets on, they squared off.

Dantas yanked Tuka to the ground. As they rolled around on the racing surface, Dantas began throwing punches to the chest protector and the helmet.

He eventually aborted that strategy and went for the strangling method. Minutes later, security guards approached the scene to breakup the fight.

Felipe Massa – Karting

“From what I saw, the whole team should be disqualified,” Massa told Motorsport.com of a race long trade of on track conduct. “But that did not happen, and what happened next was a war inside the track.”

I have never seen anything like it in my career.

“For me, this is very sad and sadder still to see my team within that. It was not my decision – I was driving the [front] kart. But I apologize to everyone for what happened today, because I have never seen anything like it in my career. The competition is inside the track, but never in this way.”

Rubens Barrichello, another former Formula 1 driver, inherited the victory.
