This session is going to be bad-fast. However, for the most part, it will be a wash as tomorrow’s forecast will see a rise in temperatures. What these teams don’t want to do is dial themselves out of the race.
40 minutes to go, Kevin Harvick jumps to the top of the board. This is a race-trim practice. However, Harvick just turned a 27.248. The track record pace set by Kurt Busch in 2017 is 26.87.
Kurt Busch is using this session to get his pit road speed correct. That’s about it. Jimmie Johnson has the same game plan, he’s run at least 10 transitions from the race track to the pit lane.
So far, Kyle Larson leads in 10 lap averages.
36 minutes remain, William Byron to the top of the board! He tops Harvick’s time by .05 seconds. Byron will start tomorrow’s race at the tail due to an engine change. 10 minutes later, Byron runs faster than that with a 27.171.
20 minutes remain, Denny Hamlin shoots to the top of the time sheet with a 27.163.
Red flag at Texas! Ricky Stenhouse Jr is hard in the wall off turn 4. He just turned his fastest lap of the weekend at 27.288. He was 7th on the board.
Suarez to the top with a 27.136.
3 minutes remain, more rain drops are falling on the speedway. However, cars are still on track and the exhaust is drying the track on the spot.
