Daytona: Race Results – July 7, 2018 – NASCAR Cup Series

July Daytona results featuring the the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Tonight, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series goes night racing in Daytona Beach, Florida. 400 miles around the 2.5-mile oval of Daytona International Speedway.

The cars are a bit different this time. On the back of the car, there’s 2 extra inches of rear spoiler, on each side. That is aimed at making the side draft more effective.

Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman are set to lead the field to the green flag. 40 laps in stage 1, 40 laps in stage 2 and 80 laps in stage 3 will complete the 160 lap event.

Stage 1
Daytona International Speedway

Green flag, Chase Elliott leads the pack into turn 1. Lap 3, Alex Bowman has built up a run on the outside. Chase Elliott pulls off the bottom for the first time, he blocks the outside lane.

Lap 5, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman and Jimmie Johnson lead a train around the outside lane. The top 15 run single file around the top.

Lap 7, the Hendrick cars start moving to the bottom. They get shuffled apart, Ricky Stenhouse Jr to the lead. It looks like it’s hard for the bottom lane to form.

8 to go in stage 1, the entire top 20 runs single file around the top. Ricky Stenhouse Jr leads the high lane.

4 to go, side by side, row by row. Oh how things change when stage points are being passed out. Stenhouse is blocking both lanes. The bottom lane stalls. Stenhouse and Dillon lead around the top.

1 to go, Kyle Busch has a run down the back stretch. Larson tries to block and go with him, he didn’t move in time. Dillon tries to block Busch, Busch runs high and drives around Larson. He’s looking for the lead coming to the line.

Stage 2
Daytona International Speedway

The field hits the pit lane. Brad Keselowski and William Byron will lead them back to green with two tires.

Green, Keselowski leads. TY Dillon doesn’t get going. He’s coasting on the apron at the start finish line.

Lap 48, Paul Menard is around down the back stretch. Menard moved down from the top lane. He was hooked by the nose of Jimmie Johnson as he formed a run through the middle. As Menard looped across the track he was hit again by David Ragan which lifted the rear end in the air by 12 inches. Moderate damage for Menard and the caution is out.

Green, Keselowski gets the initial jump. Byron pulls even on the outside heading into turn 1. Kurt Busch gives Byron a push on the outside, Byron leads.

Big crash behind them! Ricky Stenhouse Jr was on the bumper of Keselowski. They had a run going, Byron came down to block it. At the same time, Ricky Stenhouse Jr was turned to the left while on the rear bumper of Keselowski.

That sent Keselowski hard right into the outside wall. Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and many more are involved.

“The #2 got wrecked and so did everybody else,” Denny Hamlin told NBC after exiting the care center.

“Any other driver out there wants to throw a bad block I’m just going to drive through you and wreck you,” Brad Keselowski says after his trip through the care center.

Green, Byron gets a huge shove from Kyle Busch on the jump. Byron leads on the outside.

Lap 65, Kyle Busch pulls to the outside of William Byron for the lead. Ricky Stenhouse just pushed up the hill, he hooks the left rear of Busch. The #18 comes down the banking and clips Byron in the right rear. Another big crash in front of the field.

Green, Stenhouse gets the jump on Ryan Newman. They run side by side for a full lap.

7 to go in stage 2, Stenhouse noses ahead on the outside. The entire field forms single file around the outside of the track.

1 to go, 10 car break away at the front. Stenhouse leads Michael McDowell. Stenhouse cruises to the stage win at Daytona.

Stage 3
Daytona International Speedway

Ty Dillon and Clint Bowyer lead the race off pit road with a two tire call. Bowman is first off with 4 tires in 3rd. AJ Allmendinger stayed out. Damage repair for Stenhouse. Bowman returns to the pit lane.

Green, a big piece of tape on the nose of the #14 and it’s all fixed up. Clint Bowyer leads on the bottom with a push from Kasey Kahne.

Lap 83, McDowell has a run. He pulls to the outside and drives around Bowyer.

Lap 93, McDowell leads a train around the outside lane. Stenhouse Jr has moved into the second position already. Despite being involved in the big one, Harvick runs 3rd. Truex has purposefully dropped to the back. It’s an accident avoidance plan, a solid one.

Lap 102, the top 18 cars run single file around the top.

Lap 108, Truex nearly lost the draft. But, he caught the toe. Now, he’s driving to the front, by himself! Martin Truex Jr leads the train on the inside line. He’s all the way up to 6th.

Johnson and Truex pull off the top to lead the inside lane. Stenhouse is pushed to the lead as they run side by side all the way back to 20th.

Lap 109, Jimmie Johnson looks to the outside. Truex doesn’t follow. Johnson takes the lead to the cheers of the crowd! He begins blocking both lanes.

48 to go, McDowell looks to the inside in turn 1. Johnson doesn’t block the win, McDowell leads. Johnson dives back to the inside, he beats him in the race to the bottom. McDowell tried to block, they made light contact. Johnson is back in the lead!

41 to go, Johnson and the rest of the Chevrolet’s head for the pit lane.

38 to go, four Ford’s pit from the lead group.

37 to go, Kyle Larson is around with a flat tire. He collects Stenhouse Jr and the caution is out.

Jimmie Johnson has cycled back to the lead. However, just before this he was handed a penalty for pitting outside the box. It would have been a green flag penalty, no he’ll serve it under yellow.

Green, Truex gets the jump on Kasey Kahne.

28 to go, DJ Kennington is around by himself on the backstretch. He stalls and the caution is out.

Green, Truex gets the jump with a push from Bubba Wallace. The high side lost momentum at the launch but they’re coming quickly. Truex doesn’t even attempt to block. Kasey Kahne drives by on the outside. Kahne blocks both lanes. Bowman muscles his way inside Harvick.

20 to go, Kahne, Harvick and Bowman run at the front. They’re two by two behind them.

Aric Almirola runs into the left side door of Stenhouse through the tri-oval. Stenhouse has a light fender rub but they both continue. 11 to go, the left rear tire has exploded on the #17.

Green, Kahne and Harvick run even into turn 1. Harvick is clear on the bottom with a push from Martin Truex Jr.

5 to go, they’re 4 wide heading into turn 3. Joey Gase gets clipped. He heads up the hill into McDowell and Almirola. Jimmie Johnson spins to avoid it.

Green-White-Checkered, Harvick and Truex lead at the line. Truex has a huge push from Erik Jones on the outside. Truex noses ahead and drops to the bottom lane.

Coming to 1 to go, Truex leads. They’re crashing behind them. Bubba Wallace was pushing Clint Bowyer. The bumpers didn’t line up and Bowyer went around in front of the field. Many cars are involved. Harvick is out. Stenhouse puts a few more dents in it but he’s still rolling. Red flag, they’ll rack ’em again.

Green, Kahne gives a push to Truex. Truex leads by 2 car lengths into turn 1. Kahne has a run off turn 2, he drives around him on the outside. Truex side drafts him and pulls him back. Erik Jones drives outside both of them!
