Homestead-Miami Speedway practice times and 10-lap averages for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series on September 16, 2018
Today, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series takes to the track for their opening round of Homestead practice. This is the lone pre-qualifying practice.

Green on the session, Martin Truex Jr is the first car on the track at Homestead-Miami Speedway
10 minutes into the opening round of practice, 14 cars are still rolling through inspection. NASCAR issued a warning ahead of the weekend that they were going to enforce the rear quarter panel rules.
On the left side, teams went the quarter panel short so the air vents out from under the car. On the right side, you want the quarter panel as tall as possible. Multiple teams are struggling with the inspection line.

Joey Logano is fighting a loose condition. He went out, chased it up the banking and returned to the garage area.
29 minutes remain, Logano has returned to the track. He picks up speed but he’s still the slowest of the championship contenders. Logano is still 19th on the board.
10 minutes remain, Kyle Busch has put on a new set of sticker tires. Currently, Truex sits at the top of the times sheet. They have also called it a day for practice. Logano is set to head out for another run as well on an old set of times.
Logano improves on his run but he’s still outside the top 10. However, he improved and that was his 3rd run on an old set. Kyle Busch improves with his new set of tires, but he doesn’t jump to the top of the board. Busch is the only driver of the championship four two use two sets of tires in the opening practice round.

Qualifying for the Ford EcoBoost 400 will take place later tonight. That will set the starting grid for Sunday’s main event.
