This is an impound race. Teams will be allowed minimal setup changes following this session and ahead of tomorrow’s race.
It’s single car qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series. Each car will be sent off the pit lane about 10 seconds after the previous car crosses the start/finish line to start their timed lap.
Martin Truex Jr failed pre-qualifying inspection twice. NASCAR has ejected a crew member as a result but he will be allowed to maintain his qualifying time following this session.

Qualifying – Report
Duration: 1 Laps
The first 16 cars are a part of the bottom half from last week’s qualifying run. Random draw sets their order in this session.
Group A Results – Michigan Qualifying: 1. Kurt Busch (38.590); 2. Daniel Suarez (38.632); 3. Michael McDowell (38.927); 4. David Ragan (38.963); 5. Ty Dillon (39.030); 6. Matt Tifft; 7. Bubba Wallace; 8. Ryan Preece; 9. Matt DiBenedetto; 10. Landon Cassill;
The last 20 cars to roll in this session are the top 20 qualifiers from the previous race. Their order in this session was also set by a random draw.
Drivers are pinching the exit of turn four, with the lower horsepower they don’t need to run up to the wall on the exit. They then head to the apron, sparks fly as they scrape the track coming at the line to complete their lap.
Drivers are attempting to make the very wide track a little smaller. It’s similar to Daytona qualifying.
With five cars remaining, Harvick jumps to 2nd on the board. He was trending quicker through turn one and two. The car wiggled through the bumps at the entry to turn three and he lost a bit of time.
Same thing for Almirola, he’s quicker through turns one and two but lost time in turn three, he jumps to 2nd.
Joey Logano hangs on to take the pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway!
