Long Beach Qualifying
Round 1 – Report

The following includes all rounds:

Round 1 (Group 1)

The field has been split into two groups for round 1. The top six from each group advance into round two.

Alex Palou brushes the wall in turn four with the left rear.

Pato O’Ward also brushes the wall in the closing minutes of round 1. The pressure is on for both championship contenders.

Jack Harvey catches the tire barrier in the closing seconds of group 1. Will Power comes into the blind corner and slams into the parked car of Harvey. The red flag is out and the session is over.

Will Power has collected heavy damage. Team Penske is thrashing to repair the left rear.

Josef Newgarden is quickest in group 1 of round 1!

Indycar Qualifying Times (Round 1 – Group 1) : 1. Newgarden (1:08.5060); 2. Dixon (1:08.5705); 3. Palou (1:08.7114); 4. O’Ward (1:08.7717); 5. Power (1:08.8509); 6. Hunter-Reay (1:08.8576);

Round 1 (Group 2)

3 minutes remain in group 2 of round one. Herta sits at the top of the board but he’s brushed the wall and bent the toe. Herta pits for softer red tires as everyone else does the same.

Colton Herta tags the wall again. This time he’s off the pace. Six other cars set faster laps on the soft reds and Herta will be knocked out in round 1! He’s been one of the fastest cars all weekend but trying to save a set of red tires and advance on blacks has bitten him.

Felix Rosenqvist is quickest in group 2!

Indycar Qualifying Times (Round 1 – Group 2) : 1. Rosenqvist (1:08.6223); 2. Pagenaud (1:08.6641); 3. Castroneves (1:08.6995); 4. Grosjean (1:08.7144); 5. Hinchcliffe (1:08.8436); 6. Ed Jones (1:08.8772);

Round 2

The top 12 have advanced into round two. The fastest six in this round will advance into the final round.

Team Penske has repaired the car for Power. He’s on the track with a Team Penske sidepod instead of the Verizon label. Power is 6th in his first run!

5 minutes remain in round two, Castroneves sits at the top of the board thus far with a 1:08.9377. Castroneves is on red tires as most run blacks in the first run of this session.

30 seconds remain, Power tags the wall once again and he stalls.

Grosjean wins round two! Both Palou and O’Ward are out of the top 6.

Indycar Qualifying Times (Round 2) : 1. Grosjean (1:08.1776); 2. Dixon (1:08.3110); 3. Pagenaud (1:08.5307); 4. Castroneves (1:08.5561); 5. Newgarden (1:08.5673); 6. Rosenqvist (1:08.6294);

Felix, Hinchcliffe and Jones all turned their fastest laps at the end of the session despite the local yellow for Power’s machine. The results are in review.

Indycar officials took a long time to review the situation. The time set on the last run for Jones has been disallowed. The top 6 do not change.

Round 3

Six cars have advanced into the final round. It’s a six minute session and the run for Indycar pole position in Long Beach.

3 minutes remain, Castroneves sits at the top of the board.

2 minutes remain, Grosjean brushes the wall. He heads for the pit lane with 50 seconds remaining.

In the closing seconds, Newgarden jumps to the top of the board with used tires and he’ll start from the pole position!
