Ryan Newman returns to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2023

Ryan Newman will race for Rick Ware Racing at Darlington Raceway

Ryan Newman hasn’t raced in the NASCAR Cup Series since 2021. His last race came with Roush Fenway Racing in the No. 6 car.

Newman insisted that he wasn’t retiring. And now, in 2023 the driver is set to make his return.

The 45-year-old will drive for Rick Ware Racing in his return next week. Newman will race on May 12th at Darlington Raceway during throwback weekend.

Cody Ware remains absent from his Rick Ware Racing seat. He was arrested and suspended indefinitely by NASCAR.

Ryan Newman comments

“I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Rick Ware Racing and Ford,” Newman said. “I think this will be good for all of us with our combined experience and knowledge.

“Being part of the Throwback Weekend at one of my favorite tracks in Darlington is pretty special. After recently being named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers, it carries even some significance.”

More events are planned beyond Darlington Raceway, those remain TBA.

Rick Ware comments

“I remember watching ‘Thursday Night Thunder’ on ESPN and seeing Ryan compete against some stout competition in those days,” said team owner Rick Ware.

“I became a fan then and when he first came to NASCAR, I knew he was going to be a great driver and win a lot of races.

“He brings great depth and insight to RWR while we continue to grow our team. Ryan’s been a great ambassador for our sport and Ford. We’re really looking forward to racing with him this season.”

Ryan Newman has 18 career wins in the NASCAR Cup Series.
