NASCAR admits to missed call at Watkins Glen International

Parker Kligerman called out NASCAR after the race

It’s not very often that NASCAR makes a mistake. There’s a thick rule book that helps aid in that cause.

However, when NASCAR does make an error, they’re known to own up to it. And, in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event, an error was made in the tower.

On the final restart, several drivers were involved in a crash. Those cars should have gone to the tail. However, they didn’t.

3 races remain in the NASCAR Xfinity Series regular season. Kligerman sits just 3 points below the playoff cut line.

Parker Kligerman was frustrated with where he restarted

“Why we restarted ninth I have no idea,” Kligerman told NBC Sports Saturday’s race.

“We’ve got to talk to NASCAR and somebody has got to explain this to me because I’m pretty sure the car that hit me in the wreck was the #9, who then starts fifth. I get sent to ninth.”

He added, “If we start fifth, we win this race. That’s really disappointing.”

NASCAR details the lineup process on restarts

“Basically, at the time of caution, there’s loops all the way around the race track and there’s a transponder that’s on every car,” Elton Sawyer stated via Sirius XM NASCAR Radio.

“So, when the caution comes out, there is a timestamp of the last loop you have passed. It gives us a print-out, in the tower. Even the cars that are involved in the accident. That’s your running order.”

“You take the vehicles that are involved in the accident. In that case, the #7, #17 and the #9. You pull them out because they’re in the wreck. That gives you a lineup.”

“In our sport, it’s really difficult to call timeout and say, ‘Ok, we’re going to take 10 minutes here to get this figured out.’ We don’t have that luxury to do that.”

NASCAR admits mistakes; Looks to return to roots in 2021

NASCAR admits they missed the call

“We did miss a car. Actually, we missed two on Saturday and didn’t get them in the right spot. That’s on us.”

“We’ll have our competition meetings. Things we did well, things we didn’t do so well. How are we going to get better?”

“If we have to take a little longer to get the lineup. If we have to take a little longer to get the racetrack cleaned up. First and foremost, that’s the most important thing.”

This weekend, NASCAR heads to Daytona International Speedway.
