NASCAR modifies rules for Kyle Larson

Kyle Larson will be gifted a pass as he runs the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600

Before each race, NASCAR hosts a drivers meeting. Officials go over basic procedures and notify drivers of any changes in the meeting.

If a driver misses the drivers meeting they are forced to forfeit their starting position and start the race from the rear of the field.

In 2024, Kyle Larson is set to run the Indy 500 in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the same day, he’ll race in the Coca-Coca 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Both are the longest races for each respective series.

That leaves a narrow window between each race. Larson will likely miss the drivers meeting for NASCAR’s event.

There’s only a handful of drivers that have run both races in the same day. They have all been forced to start at the rear of the field in the NASCAR event after missing the driver’s meeting.

Previous drivers that ran the double: John Andretti, Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch

NASCAR has elected to give Larson a pass. Starting at the rear in 2024 is a bigger deal due to stage points. Points are earned throughout the race instead of just at the finish.

Tony Stewart ran The Double in 1999 and again in 2001. Of the four drivers that have run both races, Stewart is the only driver that has finished both events, which he did in 2001. Stewart set the gold standard finishing sixth in Indianapolis and 3rd in Charlotte.

Larson will drive for Arrow McLaren in the Indy 500. It will be his first career Indycar Series start.
