Kyle Larson likely to miss the start of NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600

Rain has delayed the start of the Indy 500; NASCAR Playoff implications

Kyle Larson is currently in Indianapolis, Indiana. He’s set to make his first start in the Indy 500.

Tonight, he was scheduled to race in the Coca-Cola 600. The NASCAR Cup Series race takes place under the lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

However, rain showers have moved into the Indianapolis area, delaying the start of the race. That’s also caused a conflict.

Hendrick Motorsports stated, “Despite the rain delay, Kyle Larson will start the Indianapolis 500.”

The Indy 500 has yet to drop the green flag. But, making the start of the Coca-Cola 600 is now impossible.

Justin Allgaier has been selected as the reserve driver of the No. 5 for tonight’s NASCAR race.

There is a small chance of rain also hitting the North Carolina area. A delay there as well would be the only chance, aside from exiting Indianapolis early, for Larson to make the start of the race.

Larson still intends to fly to Charlotte Motor Speedway despite likely missing the green flag. When he gets there, he plans to jump in the seat, replacing Allgaier.

Playoff implications

Kyle Larson has already qualified for the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. However, the rules state that a driver must run every event to be eligible.

NASCAR Rule Book:

“Unless otherwise authorized by NASCAR, driver(s) and Team Owner(s) must start all Championship Events of the current season to be eligible for The Playoffs.”

“If a starting position was not earned, then the driver(s) and Team Owner(s) must have attempted to Qualify, at the discretion of the Series Managing Director, for the Race.”

Hendrick Motorsports will be to request a waiver for Larson to be eligible.
