NASCAR explains the Daytona 500 finish

William Byron and Alex Bowman were side by side at the time of the race ending caution

On Monday night, NASCAR ran the postponed Daytona 500.

Coming to the white flag, Ross Chastain spun across the nose of Austin Cindric as Cindric got a push from Corey LaJoie. Both Cindric and Chastain went sliding through the infield grass.

The leaders were crossing the line to start the final lap. A caution after taking the white flag ends the event.

At the time of the caution, William Byron and Alex Bowman were side by side. Bowman had the momentum and shortly after the caution, he was ahead of Byron.

However, at the time of the caution, Byron was the leader. He was declared the winner of the Daytona 500.

NASCAR shared an aerial image of the field at the exact moment of the caution. The image was used to determine the winner of the race.

NASCAR stated, “After taking the white flag, William Byron was the leader at the time of the final caution.”

Mike Forde comments

“NASCAR uses all available resources at the end,” stated Mike Forde, NASCAR Managing Director of Racing Communications.

“Here is the aerial photo at the time of caution. You can also see the No. 2 car [Cindric] coming back up the racetrack. That’s why the yellow was called. Had hoped it would have stayed down on the apron like the 1 [Chastain] did and end under green.”
