The incident was retaliation for contact earlier in the race. However, Ross Chastain shoved Hocevar into the side of Smith.

After the post-race retalliation, Smith was made aware that Hocevar was not the cause of the initial contact. Smith responded saying he didn’t care.

NASCAR responded by issuing a $50,000 fine to Smith for the move.

Carson Hocevar comments on the penalty to Zane Smith

“It was unexpected. I was looking around, I think I was looking down and I hit,” Carson Hocevar stated from the media center at Talladega.

“My mind set was like, ‘Who did I just run into?’ I thought somebody stopped in front of me.”

“I looked around in front of me and there was nobody in front of me. I looked behind me, ‘Oh! I got hit.’ “

“It was a hard hit, for sure. But moreso the fact that it was unexpected. That’s all I got.”

Hocevar and Smith have not talked since the incident.

“It seems pretty one-sided to me. I don’t really care. Yeah, I don’t care.”

Today, the NASCAR Cup Series is racing on the 2.66-mile oval of Talladega Superspeedway. It’s race 8 of 10 in The Chase.
